G'day, just brought a 2000 Discovery TD5 and is going great however after I had it serviced (100,000km) I found the mechanic has used 15W/40 (pennzoil long life). I noticed that the handbook specifies 5W/30-50, which I assume is a full synthetic oil. Question is does it matter that the oil used does not match the handbook?

Using a heavier grade oil can cause higher fuel consumption and possibly cause excessive wear. Dump the oil and replace it. Then have a go at the moron who put in 15w oil. I would be giving him the bill for the oil and your time. There are plenty of options, I am currently using BP Visco 5000 5w/40 as I can get it in 20 litre drums for about$125, heaps cheaper than buying in 4litre packs, but buy from a distributor depot if you can. You can use a few like Castrol Synthetic R, Valvoline, Caltex all make something.
Hey, I've also got a 2000 Td5 Disco and it needs its 100k service. What did you get stung for it? If you're in Sydney I'd be interested in where you got it done as well. You can PM if you dont want others to know.
The service cost around $140 however this was way to cheap, especially as the guy used the wrong oil. In fact this was one of the reasons I chased up what oil he was using as I could'nt imagine he would be using the correct oil for that price.Originally posted by kels

Next time I would expect to pay around $300-400 for a proper service. Sorry I can't help your Sydney question as I am in Perth.
My dealer uses 0/40 Mobil 1, and I was advised by them to use 5-50 Mobil 1 as the 0/40 cant be bought retail. Just the oil costs about $100, but durability is the name of the game. Dealer servicing cost me from $500-$1000 usually depending on what I break at the time.
Cheers

I recommend going to your trusted LR mechanic with an empty container and asking for a fill. Also a good idea for coolant. Try buying TD5 coolant from Repco!
How does that work ?Originally posted by CraigE

Thought improved oil pressure was good ?
