My defender (2000 td5) has more rust than I would like it to and I would like to repair it however I'm not sure of the best way to go about it.
I have hopefully attached some photos of the trouble areas. My main question is do I replace the whole firewall, get it repaired, or cut it out and fix in situ?
There is also rust in the doors but I"ll leave that one for another day!
Also any advice on cheaper/easier options would also be welcome
Interested to see how you go, Tom. My 2008 110 is already showing frightening signs of rust in a number of spots on the body and a patch I spotted on the firewall (passenger side) that is already looking ugly. Got a trip to Tassie and then I plan to take a better look, removing the dash.
Admittedly I live on the coast and use the Defender on the beach occasionally — grown up surfing and running up and down the coast huntin' waves, which is my main use for the Landy, with the odd trip to the mountains. I am meticulous with washing the Landy after any trips, inside and out. I also rust-proofed the underbody, doors and bonnet (which are all in good shape from what I can see) and I've got a bloody 'miracle' electronic rust protection unit from previous owners.
Safe to say I wouldn't recommend anyone rely on such a device to prevent or even slow rust.
Will post some pics of my battle against the evil Landy cancer.
I'm not sure i've got the skills/tools/space required to make one myself...
I've started pulling everything off it so i can swap it with a new one ($$$), but I might just take it to someone who can repair it for me. Does any one know of anyone in the Melbourne or Bendigo area who could do this??
