Ok! What the heck ?
Jump on in (ser3 exarmy) Lets go, Shoot off from 1st gear change into 2nd....and there you stay, don't go back into 1st or nevermind getting into 3rd...ok "PANIC" ....drive home very slowy and waiting for something to BLOW, PHEEW never did.
Now, scratch ones head thinking, "What did I do wrong when I changed the clutch and throwout bearing...can't be that as it was done at least 10,000 klm ago, or is it that damed rear main bearing seal that decided to leak on me just after the motor went back in?"
Took all covers off gearbox and had a look "WOW I'm not touching that till I know what to look for"
Rang around and as usual , TALL SCARY STORIES WITH BIG $$$$$$$$$.
"I don't think so lads" I said cringing .
So what has happened ?
Last story I was told is that there is some worm type gears in there that might have given up, but I don't know.
All I know is that the gear box has to come out and while I'm at that stage, I'll do that pesky oil seal
I so love my Landrovers, yes I do I tell you.
So on my knees and looking towards the heavens and hoping that all will be fixed for me (doubt it)...I ask everyone out there for their imput, as to what I should do. :?

you've probably already checked, but is the shift mechanism working properly? I had a similar experience in my old SIII and it was a loose nut jammed inside the shift mechanism - a five minute job to fix.

Does the clutch work? NO - could be clutch or hydraulics.
YES - Is the gear selector jammed YES - can you unjam it if there's something caught in the selectors? If nothing's caught, can you pry it out of 2nd with a screw driver against the selector. If you're back in neutral, see what happens when you try to drive again.
NO - if the gear selector moves to the neutral posi and the g/box stays in second, then remove the top cover and check to see if the selector fork is loose on the shaft.
Inspect the g/box with the top removed for broken clips or gears that might be jamming the shaft.
If the g/box runs OK in 2nd with no major noises or vibrations or resistence, then it sounds like a minor repair.
