    LT230 cross drilled input gear?

    Hi all,
    Some actual info needed please.
I have just rebuilt my Defender Tfer case (input gear ready to fit) and note it has the smaller (shorter, non cross drilled) input gear. The case has had the oil slinger fitted at some time and is evidenced also by the yellow painted cross on the rear cover.

I have read the service bulletins and note the cross drilled input gear is the reccomended fitment following repair.

Fitting the oil slinger plate is recommended for those boxes which will not take the longer cross drilled gear, again following repair.

I am aware of the greater spline area etc of the x drilled gear.
My splines are in excellent condition.
    My question is:

Does the addition of the oil slinger plate solve the lack of lubrication when using a non x drilled gear, IE(just as good as the X drilled gear) or is it an improvement, but still subject to earlier wear?

I am happy to buy the x drilled input gear, I just dont want to if the oil slinger plate mod does the same job.

Some on here have cross-drilled the standard gear. From all accounts although its not cheese, its not impossible to drill at home.
    Just another option.....

Hi steve. I have fitted the cross drilled gear to my county. It is not only just longer but bigger in diameter while it has 26 teeth the same as the original. I found out the hard way. That is if it is the same as i had. I also changed the intermediate gear to do it. I went to that trouble as i have a pto winch and cannot fit the slinger. So it is possible to do but is a bit fiddly to do. I had to make a shim to set the rear cover back to get the correct pre load on the bearings. Unless you have access to some good gear you wont drill the gear as they are case hardened after manufacturing. Tim

SteveG and Vern, do you believe/ experienced the gear need to be drilled regardless of the slinger or were yours not fitted with the slinger?

I've drilled mine too. Used some supposedly indestructible drill bit that drills almost anything.....until it broke. Finished it off with a good quality sharp HSS drill with some cutting fluid and it got through the rest. Mine did have a modified oil feed which directed oil into the splines, and the mainshaft splines were showing only minimal wear. The splines were however a bit gunked up so am hoping the cross drilling will be better.

I had no Slinger, I had to drill mine as you can't get a cross drilled gear to suit 1.003 t/case. I have a new cross drilled gear here as it didn't fit, may suit your needs?
