Temp guage

I'm finally getting around to getting the water temp guage in the landy attached and working.

the temp sender never had an earth attached, so it obviously wasn't going to work. I've attached an earth, and if you touch the earth and the wire to the guage, the guage goes to the top (no resistance).

I presume the sensor works by decreasing the resistance as it gets hotter to vary the guage.

Now I can drive as much as I want, or pit the sender in as hot a water as I can, but the guage doesn't move. But if the engine is warmed up, and you turn it off, then start up again, the guage goes to the top (hot) and stays there.

It is a holden red, but is the sensor stuffed, or is it just set up for the wrong resistance for the guage to work properly??

(at this point I think that the snder is cactus).

Also i'm hooking up the ammeter, and I think it was rocket that said how to do it, but I either lost teh info, or can;t find it on AULRO / REMLR. Can somebody remind me ops:

Sounds like the sender has insufficient earth or is a wookie one.

Think someone recently had a question about her 202 series Landy running hot. Think the main problem was her thermostat and the reality reds run far hotter than the rover engines do so a higher reading on the gauge is normal.

Mentioned mine has a 82ºC thermostat but runs at 85ºC which shows about the top of the 'N' on the temp gauge. Landy red mark on the gauge is 105º which is just getting warm with the holden.

But it sure sounds like a wookie sender if it takes off for the red after sitting momentarily with the engine off. Should rise a little but not much and should fall if engine is turned on again.

I don't think that the sender is particularly expensive, I might grab a new one and see how it goes.

I'll check how good the earth is as well. Thanks 8)

    How'd you get on ?

One other thing I forgot to mention is sometimes the voltage stabiliser can do strange things when they are on the way out. Normally shows as temp reads hot and fuel is low. Don't think that's your trouble but something to keep in mind.

With the ammeter make real sure the wires on the back of the gauge cannot touch the body.

I may be missing something, but there shouldn't be any earth on the sender unit, it earths via the engine block. By attaching an earth to the sender and running it to the guage, you have by-passed the sender unit, hence the non-functioning guage.

The sender works as the heat changes the resistance between the guage and earth.

I may have misunderstood your post though.

Yeah I was a bit vague

Did mean earth but engine earth not earth the sender, for the reason you point out.

As a side when I put the thematic fan on mine the switch, at the back of the block as I though that's where the most heat would be, wouldn't activate the relay. Traced it all back to insuffucent earth on the block, another earth to near the switch and no more problem.

Well it seems that Rocket provided the ultimate (and obvious) answer.

Apparently the sender on the holden motor is for a light, so it is just on or off.

That is why I was getting nothing or all on the guage ops:

I'll need to track down a landy one so that it shows the variation.

    Thanks for the help guys

Thought you had the land rover one in there.

Just remember with the landy sender and landy gauge and the holden motor, water temperature will not be exact. Well mine never has been, least with the thematic and belt fan it's some reassurance it won't be boiling.

It will be more so that I can tell if it is getting hotter, not so much as to exactly what the temp is. Now I just have to get a temp sender and figure out how to fit it, or does it just screw in ??

You can get an aftermarket sender and guage (matched) for the holden red motor from your freindly neighborhood auto-shop. As a matter of fact, you can get red motor parts from most local milk-bars!

I'd recommend matching, otherwise you can spend days mucking about with resistors and what-not, trying to get your guage accurate. If you dont want to buy a new guage, you can get the data from the landrover sender unit (using an old l/r sender and a multi-meter) and find one that matches the holden - guys that do the holden conversion should be able to tell you which one to go for.
