Bloody Steering Damper !

Workmate adviced to remove it from my non-PAS Stage One...well, it was 10 minutes job, so why not try ?...I am schocked ! - I no longer need PAS ! I didn't measure, but I guess effort needed is at least 3 times lower.
Well, have to remember about my thumbs...
Is that always like this ? I mean all st dampers add so huge resistance ?

I had a sierra setup with offset rims, 31's and no steering damper (that worked). When you step it diagonally etc it would spin the steering wheel hard enough to wake you up very quickly and then break your fingers. Most of the time it was ok, but when it did it - look out.
Cheers

Hi AdamV8
I would replace it,wait to you drive on a corrugated gravel rd NOT NICE,can be scary!!!!
There are "new" self centre style dampers available, but unsure about availability for series busses.

I just tested on corrugated gravel-till 50km/h is not so bad, but first I need to set box freeplay. Step by sted, especially that I am just removing some springs from packs...

Hi Adam
Try 100 or so into a bend!!!!!!
My series landies have never suffered from heavy steering, try a '88 mitsi trytoo 4WD,real heavy and huge turning circle to match!!
Its possible your steering relay(the one in the crossmember) is needing lubricant or on its way out.Warning read a manual before opening one up,they can take your head off!!!!

Thanks Andy
Steering relay is OK, all my 109 is generally mechanically more than good In this case, steering damper was the only reason fore my sweat.
Now I can turn one hand easily, even when not moving, what was before almost impossible with two hands

Not fun those relays to put back together without the right gear either.

Found good grease in both relay and steering box makes a big difference over oil, tapping in a grease nipple makes them easier to service. Might take a while for the grease to work in but results make it worth the wait.

The bloody steering damper was made is USA, self centering with spring outside. That spring was prime reason for huge resistance. I have removed that spring eventually and its very good now. I guess bloody damper was made for trucks with PAS, not for manual.
