RR V8 EFI - Flushing oils, use Diesel oil?

    G'day Guys,

I read somewhere that I can use Diesel oil as a flushing oil for my V8 EFI, as there are more detergents in the diesel oil.

    Anyone done this? Any comments?

Otherwise, what is the best flushing agent for my oil?

    Looking forward to your responses.

I've heard of people using diesel oil to flush their systems out in the past, an i've had to use some diesel oil in my vehicle on my last trip because we didn't have enough pil left after some repairs were done on the fly. I can't say that I noticed any particular benifits or disadvantages to it, but others seem sold on the idea.

    I'm not 100% sure myself :?

Yea it's true that diesel oils have a higher content of detergent to deal with all the soot that they produce, some oils have a much higher content than others though. For eg. the army uses a castrol oil from memory, that has such a high detergent content that even after their engines have done 3-400 000km's the internals are sparkling.
The only catch is if you use an oil with to high a detergent content then it will strip all that important gum that is holding you engine together, an it will start leaking like a sive. I've seen it happen a couple of times, in particular my engine.
    So be carefull !!

    Good luck

    Hi
You will find that diesel oils have very similar ratings to petrol oils, yes diesel oils have higher detergent levels to deal with the unclean burn of diesel.
Diesel oil will do no harm if your engine is mechanicaly sound, where you may run into problems is if your pistons/rings are excessively worn. The diesel oil will break down the gums/varnish on the pistons and bores(which may be providing compression),if your motor is worn out it will probably be a little more smokey and use more oil.
I use diesel oil in my Ser3 202,its on LPG,when changing oils the oil is as clean as the day it went in thanks to the LPG(very clean fuel). The main reason for using the diesel oil is I run a Mitsi Trytoo diesel and it works out cheaper buying a decent diesel oil for the pair of them by the 10 or 20lt.
Im currently trialing CEM oil flush/fuel treatment(as advertised in 4WD mags) for the Trytoo,(dirty horrible diesel motor!!!!).I must admit,I did get an extra litre of oil out on the initial oil flush(measured exactly what went in and came out) and performance is definately up and fuel economy is better(extra100 to 175ks a tank).Im not to familiar with the 200/300 TDI motors but if they tend to glaze up/suffer from blowby(pressurizing the sump) like the jap motors do it is $90 well spent. If you are not too impressed with a diesel motor have a look at some of their testimonials on thier web site. Costeffective.com.au
I have only done the main flush, which involves dropping the oil, putting new oil and the additive in and running for 30mins and re changing the oil and fitting a new filter,as I said above an extra litre of oil came out which is hopefully built up crud this stuff has dissolved, further services call for a lesser amount of the addative an hour of driving before droping the oil.
The fuel addative goes in every tankfull, the kit will cover about 4 oil changes and I think it was 1000 or so litres of fuel.

Some years ago in the age of the 3.5 in the RR and not long after I took possession I discovered an amazing amount of gunk under the rocker covers. I decided that the way to go was flushing oil, however, that product had long ago been dropped from the oil companies shelves. I rang Shell and was told by their technical department that deisel engine oil was the way to go. If I remember correctly they said to run the oil for 1000 Km and then change to normal oil. This I did and was surprised at the colour of the oil after that distance, it certainly cleaned a lot of gunk out but I couldn't say if the engine was affected as I put in the 4.6 shortly after.
I suggest contacting one or two of the oil companies for their advice.
