Some years ago in the age of the 3.5 in the RR and not long after I took possession I discovered an amazing amount of gunk under the rocker covers. I decided that the way to go was flushing oil, however, that product had long ago been dropped from the oil companies shelves. I rang Shell and was told by their technical department that deisel engine oil was the way to go. If I remember correctly they said to run the oil for 1000 Km and then change to normal oil. This I did and was surprised at the colour of the oil after that distance, it certainly cleaned a lot of gunk out but I couldn't say if the engine was affected as I put in the 4.6 shortly after.
I suggest contacting one or two of the oil companies for their advice.
