ZF HP24 output seal in North WA

    Hi,

Not sure if this is the best place to post but it's not an SOS... yet !

Currently touring around Australia in our Defender 90 which is a TD5 with an auto conversion using an HP 24 gearbox as used in the 4.6 P38 Range Rover. It uses a standard LT230 transfer box.

There is an ATF leak from between the transfer box and the extension housing which I'm assuming is from the auto gearbox output seal. It's not major at the moment but as we're planning on heading along the Gibb River. Road then on to Alice and through the Simpson I'd rather not risk it.

Currently in Tom Price and heading north to Port Hedland then onward to Broome. Can anyone give me some pointers to reliable LR savvy mechanics that could replace the seal without making things worse ? Timing sucks too given the Easter holiday etc...

Can probably make it to Broome and have seen there are a couple of places listed there but if there's anywhere better suited along the way that'd be great !

I'm a bit concerned that trusting someone who isn't familiar with the gearbox to do this simple job might make things worse... I'm tempted to do the job myself but with limited tools and no transmission lift the LT230 is a PITA to manhandle and refilling the gearbox with ATF is difficult as it's the later type with no filler pipe.

    Any suggestions ???

From memory I cant remember seeing any dedicated landy specialists up that way. There may be in Broome. I cant remember seeing anyone anyway. I think the nearest is Geraldton and thats 1200km back down the road.

Sorry I cant be more helpful.

P.S. Mods is this worthy of being in the SOS section or in the general discussion section as he might get a better response???

P.S.S. Broomedefender is a member in Broome and may know someone that might be able to help. Im not sure whether anywhere will be open now though and Perth is probabily just as far back down the road.

    Hi
I blew a motor 72km from headland, picked up by rawa and transported to headland and dumped, couldn't get a mechanic to even confirm I had a buggered engine to allow transport to broome. Not interested as it was a landrover. So headland is out. I live in broome and advise to backtrack to Geraldton as the mechanics in broome cant be trusted and even worse now its tourist season. Look me up when you finally get to broome and say gooday
    cheers

Doesn't sound too positive as far as mechanics are concerned then

I think I might just go for it and just keep an eye on the level, I checked it this morning and if anything there's too much oil in the box, maybe because it was filled in winter in the UK where temps were much closer to 0C than 30C !

Wish I'd stayed in SA for the Easter meet now !

The SOS section is purely for breakdowns where urgent assistance is required.

I live up here and like others say North of Geraldton and you are pretty much on your own.
That said Barth Brothers in Karratha have a good reputation I would use them if I had too.
But I always drive to Geraldton.
