Oil leak on 300tdi alternater side of block?

Ah!.. Another leak that's growing....Appears I'm getting a lot coming through from the bypass side of things ,up through the intercooler and then out the manifold joint,....I think,..Running like a dream and not much oil consumption overall...Thought it might be turbo seals ..but how do you tell in that department,..Thanks for any replys.

    Cheers Sumo.

If I understand your description correctly, it is almost certainly the manifold gasket that is the problem.

It is not unusual and not a concern for a small amount of oil to make its way to the inlet manifold via the turbo and intercooler.

It is quite common for the inlet manifold gasket to crack and allow oil to appear on the passenger's side of the block in behind the alternator.

It is easily fixed an not a big concern (if that is indeed the cause of your oil leak. )

    Sumo,
    unlikely to be turbo seals
most likely just blow by oil via the PCV cyclone, into the induction hose through the system and out the manifold gasket. It is a shared exhaust/inlet manifold gasket pretty quick and easy to change but I have found them to be of variable quality. Some last a long time others way to short.

Maybe JC or some other pro will chime in with a recommended brand of gasket

I had the same symptons, heaps of oil thru the turbo and intercooler. It was excessive blow-by from the rocker boxes being fed into the air inlet. I re-directed the engine top vent into another container, No more oil in the intercooler/turbo/manifold.

I believe you should check and confirm that the oil is not leaking from the turbo oil supply hose or the Turbo return to sump hose. If you have a leak in the feed hose and it fails completely you will have an expensive repair bill, do the intake gasket, but don't overlook the turbo feed hose, Regards Frank.
