Erratic rev counter
Hi from Perth to you all. I have recently inherited a 1999 Series 1 Disco 300 TDI. Reliable beast with only 200K on the clock, but she has a few problems. One is that the rev counter works only now and again and swings around a bit wildly when it does. Is this a simple loose wire or similar?
All help appreciated.
Cheers

The tacho feed is from the alternator so make sure the terminals are nice and tight.

The tacho is driven by a wire off the back of the alternator, the wire is white with a grey stripe on what is known as the "W" terminal. Either the connector is loose or your alternator isn't working as well as it should.

Welcome to Our World.
x2. Most of your electrical problems will be caused by wiring faults, the kind that ex-jap owners have no understanding of... Loose fastenings & corrosion on earth points, barely adequate cable gauge, loose connectors, under-rated switches such as the headlamp beam switch on some... Some major components don't seem to be as long-lived as 'other' brands...
All are known (eventually) to us masochists and we're as happy to see someone else suffer...and help them out.

Welcome to the forum
If it's still erratic after checking wiring it could be time for a new alternator.
Not cheap, but simple to replace. Once replaced it should last a good while
