2.25 - 2.8 litre engine upgrade

Land Rover's 2.25 Petrol & Diesel were robust and hefty engines (read over engineered). I read somewhere that in the 50's NATO was looking for a Petrol / Diesel combo engine, a wish that was later dropped, but it may account for the similarities in the Land Rover engines.

In time the 5 bearing 2.5 was released and this same engine went on to evolve into the Tdi.

Now I'm reading that Ford in Brazil still make this motor 8O , now evolved to 2.8 litres :!: :!: :!: in Petrol and turbo diesel variants. Apparently it powers the local Ford Ranger utes.

This sounds like a good engine upgrade for those of us who need more power, but don't want to deviate too far from original . Does anyone know anything more about these engines, or how to go about importing some 2nd hand units :?:

Don't know whether you'll get them second hand yet, they have a good writeup in LROI. I am led to believe they could cost somewhere in the region of 15K landed in Aust, but that's bringing them in from the UK. If you can get a contact in Brazil could be a lot cheaper.

quality control ...

before fitting one it might be worthwhile to inspect the quality of the fastenings.

I hear they are made with Brazil Nuts !

8O 15K is a lot of dollars for an engine though, even half that if from Brazil.

I always figured a better engine could always be built from an existing for the same $'s of a replacement one whether petrol or diesel.

I saw two 2.8 Tdi (Brand New :!: :!: :!: ) today 8O 8O
$11,000 supplied with all ancillaries :!: :!:
One was going into a '96 Disco. I suppose if you want something more powerful for towing, it's cheaper than upgrading to a new Disco.

Anyway, obviously not an option for a SIII, though the gearbox will bolt straight up - if you want to rip it apart.

i remeber reading that it was made by international engines in Brazil. its not just a bigger 300tdi but is improved in other areas ie. the new turbo has adjustable vains. i think it still has a timing belt. power is 99kw @ 3800 and 375nm @1400

The guy importing them had a flyer advertising them, with some power & torque figures quoted. I'll see if I can grab a copy of the flyer on Monday and I'll post what the purported power / torque outputs are on this forum.

I've got a copy of LRO where they put one in a disco. Apparently they are quite an impressive engine.

About what a holden makes.

Though with cost of fuel these days wouldn't be a bad investment.

Ooh I dunno about breaking the gearbox, don't drive it hard and it'd be okay. I avoid the traffic lights nowadays so I don't bust it anymore.
