COOLING: Water pumps / Viscous couplings

Further to the Wanted sections:

Questions on a Series III 2.6l 6cyl LR Ex Mil engine heating / cooling set up:

1) Fan and coupling - does anyone know of alternative fits (Holden) for the viscous coupling set up that may be cheaper than LR ($240)

2) Can a electric thermo fan replace the fan set up, and if so which models / how much / can me (as a novice) do the work myself

3) Can anyone think of any reason that the steel blade set up (non viscous) found on non military 2 1/4 petrols would not cool the engine enough? (I have the spare pump and set up for this, with no fan)

4) Would anoyone want to swap a viscous coupling for some other bits such as 2 x rear prop shafts, 2 x SIII Wheels and tryes with tread etc.

Water pump etc

G'day

The early 6 cylinders did not have the viscous coupling so I see no reason why you could not fit the metal blade solid coupling fan.

As for electric fans, if you do fit one, make sure you DON'T mount it directly on the radiator as some fan kits suggest. You need to make a seperate frame to hold it .

Frankly, I would look around for the fan assembly off a Series IIa or early Series III 6 cylinder.

Get a copy of Just 4x4 and have a look for the Land Rover suppliers and weeckers. There are plenty.

Nissan 1988 Skyline electric thermo fan (12in accross) fits on the front if you want a helper fan for idling where the belt drive doesn't create enough flow to maintain temperature. Just three mounting points, bit of wiring through a relay and it's going. About $30 from an "auto dismantler".

Belt driven generally moves HEAPS more air than an electric, depends on where your bottom hose comes out of the radiator as to what size you can fit. I have a seven blade off a commodore which is a neat fit on my S3 but have the Nissan fan as well relayed to be thermatic...... just in case.

A steel Landy four blade fan should cool the six though. If it doesn't try increasing the turn on the blades to pull more air through.

Cooling waterpumps /visous fans

Hi Surferjim
I would go with the go with the solid coupling as fitted to the early 6 cyl vehicles as the less complicated it is the less to go wrong, the water pumps are the same I think there was a change at Eng Suffix "B" to Suffix "C" the early W/Pump was GWP 305. the later one R598483 that could relate to the length of the spindle (longer to take viscous coupling) that number would also relate to the Rover cars, but the simplest way is pump-solidspacer-fan, don't leave the fan shroud off as this channels the air through the radiator.
