Whirring Turbo

    Hi All

I have a 2002 Extreme and have recently noticed (after having it serviced by LR) that there is whirring sound after turning the engine off. I have tracked the noise down to what appears to be the turbo.

Is this audible noise normal? I have never noticed it on either my old Tdi or TD5 before. There is no noticeble deterioration in performance or other signs of trouble.

    Thanks

You'll find it's just the centrifugal oil filter winding down. Perfectly normal on a Td5 for around 10 seconds .

I always figured the size of the exhaust governed how much you hear the turbo. Guy next door has GU (Patrol) TD ute. Normally hear the turbo spool up first thing of a morning (a second or so after startup it gets that turbo whistle about it) and wind down after shutdown (hear it spinning in the exhaust). Mind you the exhaust on that thing is the size of my house downpipes and sounds like a Kenworth :!:

On big machinery it's normal to hear the turbo spinning after shutdown, our Massie used to for about 5 seconds so I'd suggest your vehicles noises are normal.

I know its slightly off topic but I noticed the turbo whistle more after the snorkel was fitted. Makes sense really.

Thanks all for your responses -- much appreciated!

The whirring only last for about 10-20 seconds after turning the engine off and it is a very noticeable winding down sound.

It has only come about since last servicing, which included the changing of the centrifugal oil filter....make sense.

I will ask the LR dealer next time I have the pleasure of having them crawl over 'Kimba'. The next service will be the last one before the warranty ends.

    Thanks again.
