Family on my mother's side carted bricks for a quid and therefore know a bit about turbo diesels as fitted to trucks (Volvo's mainly). The family folklore is that you leave the engine idling after travelling for extended periods at speed with load.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. It's now as clear as mud that sometimes you need one, sometimes you don't.

And for the sake of my 2003 TD5, I'll just sit in it from now on whenever I have a long run until it cools down, stops spinning, is lubricated, has brushed it's teeth and is ready for bed.

thanks everyone, it's been a great topic & discussion.

Pirate: That's my understanding and why I have mine set for 1 minute as opposed to... 5.

I did find a use for the 5 minute setting though. When I need to pop into the shop for a bottle of milk I can leave the engine running without leaving the keys in the car. If I'm quick I don't have to restart the engine (just have to remeber to turn the key back to ON).

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Turning the ignition off and leaving the engine running is fine (I can do it on the County 'cause its got a pull-out engine cut off), but turning the ignition back on whilst the engine is running is bad. An auto-elec may be able to correct me, but I'm pretty sure you can blow the diodes in the Alternator this way (thats what I was told years ago during my apprenticeship). I've never heard of it happening, but then again I've never tried it!

    Food for thought.

Hi kels, I supplied hundreds of turbo times when I was making them and had one on my DTi. I have never heard of anyone having any problems of the type mentioned.
On a number of occasions, after leaving the disco to go to a shop or what ever, I would return and the motor was still running. Putting the key in and turning it back to ON position had no effect.
The only problem I ever struck was, by habit, after putting the key in, I would turn it all the way to the start position.
The noise it made quickly made me learn the error of my ways.
    Cheers

    Been there, done that. ops:

The noise is unique... I'll give it that.
