    D1 lower swivel pins

Hi guys, just did the swivel hubs in my 99 D1. I found that the lower swivel pins were held in with countersunk torx head bolts. I hadn't seen any reference to torx heads in any forums or any manuals. It was just luck that I had the right torx bit (T40) to fit. My swivel hubs are the late type that only have the filler for the one shot grease and no drain or level plugs. I don't know if earlier types are the same. Anyway I thought this might help anyone else contemplating the same job. It might be worthwhile checking before you start as it would be a pain to find out you need the tool once you're that far into the job.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the tip Iain.

By the way, why did you have to 'do' the swivel hosings on '99 vehicle? Has it done a lot of kms or a lot of sand work? My '97 D1 has nearly 170,000 km and no sign of oil leaks from the swivels yet [touch wood]. And yes, there is oil in 'em - I've changed it a couple of times.

Basically the swivel hub seals were shot so I had to replace the grease. As it is the type with only a fill plug, no drain plug I wasn't sure how to get any grease left in there out and give them a good flush out without stripping the swivel down. I was also curious to see if any crud or water had got inside. I think LR removing the drain plugs from the swivels was a backward step. In hindsight maybe getting a hole drilled and taped for a drain plug would have been a good idea while I had them apart.

Just doing my swivels now and can't find a drain plug either :x

Do I just undo the bottom of the swivel housing to drain it :?: i.e. the two torx bolts :?:

When I did mine that's basically all I did. The grease doesn't run out real well but if you're stripping the swivel hub right down it doesn't matter as you can clean it out when it's apart.

Is there any trick to putting the grease in ? As I noticed it doesn't go in that easily though the filler plug !!

I heard if you heat it up to make it more 'runny' it is easier.

When the wheels are straight ahead the filler hole is mostly blocked. If you turn the wheel to full lock it opens up the filler hole and it goes in a lot easier. I put the tube that the LR grease comes in in a pot of hot water for a minute or so to warm it up. Seems to make it run a bit easier as well
