109 roof capacity ?

I have a chance to buy professionally, custom made, huge sizes and capacity roofrack (needs some changes, as was not made for landy). Can anobody tell me, what is nominal, accepted SIII Station Wagon "roof capacity" ? In other words what is max safe load that I can put on my white original roof, without any special supporting ?
Thanks,
adam

I think I remember reading that landrover recommend up to 140kg. I presume this includes the weight of the rack.

Hi Bmac
Taking it easy around corners is OK in controlled events, not a good weight to have up there if you need to swerve to avoid an accident.

I would be wary of the 500kgs...

Check if he has broken any of his roof/body pilars.

When modifying the rack make sure when you add the braces to attacth it to the roof, run a piece of flat steel between all of them to help it distribute the load on the roof and not let it flex as much.

BEWARE : roof racks supported on the gutter can lead to fine cracks between the roof and the internal / external gutter, resulting in internal water leaks

Having said that, I've carried around 400kg for 4,000km after the trailer broke down on one trip!!! It didn't matter about the weight, because there was probably another 1,000kg in the back. Oh how spritely the Land Rover felt to drive after it was unloaded!!!!

Weight also depends on what you are driving on.

For example, 3 adults could sleep on a roof rack - that's about 300kg with the weight of the rack.

But you wouldn't put 300kg up there and drive on corrugations :!:

Supporting the rack on a chassis mounted rollcage set up will give you more strength, but how much weight do you want to add!!??

I don't expect to put huge weight on this roofrack, generally no more than 150-200kg. I like idea to disign and make nice tent there on the top.
On the other hand, crazy mate from Canada (who travelled 27000km through Siberia, winter time (-50C, -60C), one Defender, one person) started to ask about CSR and similar planes...so who knows what may happen to this new roofrack ?

Andrew, my Dad is a bit of an old fart and normaly drives pretty slow anyway. Add the 500KG and he slows to like 25k and just plods along the back streets.

The only pillar as such in a 5 door, is the B pillar, and its fine. The windscreen and rear panels will just flex a bit where they bolt to the body.

There's no way I would do this to my Disco but the SIII seems to cope.

Bruce.
