    Defender air con

Hi all. My defender 97 mod 300TDi has an air con problem. Sounds like water is building up behind the passenger dash as when you go round corners it sloshers or more sounds like a sizzling noise. A little bit of water is coming out the drain but not as much as I would have thought. After the water builds up the air coming out dosen't get cold. The water starts to leak through into the passenger footwell onto the cheese and kisses feet! Any ideas what might be the problem??? Thanks Bent

Blocked aircon drain. Had the same on the disco a while back. Took it to an aircon man with the idea of getting it re-gassed at the same time. He unblocked the drain and didn't charge me anything. Air now blows cold and didn't need re-gasing.

    G'day Bent
Don't know what the sizzling sound could be. But I would say the water build up and underperforming air con is caused by the condensor freezing over. This then restricts or stops the air flow. To stop this happening turn the thermostat down a little, about 1/4 turn makes a huge difference. Thats the second dial behind the fan speed dial. If you get good air flow for a while then a drop off, the problem is freeze over. If however you have bad air flow from start up, I think it's a bigger problem.

    Bent,

I'd check the condensate drains first off as suggested by Timmo. I've had these block up on me. Whilst it's a Defender as opposed to a Discovery  the principles should be the same.

If that doesn't do the trick then I'll defer to others.

    Hi Bent
As others have suggested your drains seem to be blocked,no need to call the plumber, just need to clear them out.The sloshing noise will probably be the water being splashed by the blower fan,the water then freezes on the condensor fins blocking the airflow resulting in humid not real cool 8) 8) air.
Your aircon is obviously working well as its able to freeze the condensor up.While you are doing aircon maintence, cleaning the heat exchanger in the front of the radiator will improve its efficiency and help the radiator to work better.
