4.6 not running right now wont start at all

Hi all, I have recently purchased a 87 long wheel base classic that supposedly has a 40k old 4.6 in it, how ever im not very familiar with these cars and as there are no obvious markings on the motor "3.9, 4.6, ect" and the vin number on the motor doesn't relate to anything I can find on the internet.

Anyway what ever it is I'm having proplems,* when I picked it up I was running it on gas and it was running perfecting just a bit slower than I expected, it never occured to me to test it on petrol probably because judging by the gauge it was very empty. Anyway I got it home still running perfectly on gas then I put 20L of fuel in which bought the gauge to just under a quarter. And when I changed it over it ran perfectly but then when I reved it it bogged down and would stall, flick it back to gas ran perfeclty.

So I started pulling stuff apart checking fuel lines, fuel pumps, filters, cleaning up the engine bay of unnecessarily long hoses, rewire and check all the connections to the coil because I herad it could be loose connections could be at fault.

Also when I was working in the engine bay I noticed the a wire was unplugged from what I think is the crank angle sensor about 600mm underneath the distributor. I dont know if I knocked it out when I was working on it or it just wasnt connected but I reconnected it as well.

So then when I started it to check if the problem was still there it was hard to start and when it did fire it sounded like it was running on only 7 cylinders at idle and would cut out after a while or just when you reved it on both gas and petrol. Whereas before it would still idle fine on petrol just cut out when you reved it like there was a pressure problem.

So I left it for one or two days then went to start it again and it would crank fine but I could never get it to fire. So now its not running at all.

Now I know there is a problem with the alternator that was there since I picked it up so if that was the problem I dont know why its only started to play up now. it was charging but only at 13v. Ive put new batteries in and jumped it of bigger batteries and jumped it off cars running at over 14v and no luck.

So theres a lot of info there and a lot of possible problems but any help would be appreciated,* thanks.

The only way you will identify a 4.6 is by the engine number prefix if it hasn't been shaved off by the reconditioner. There's no such thing as a crank sensor on your Rangie. All timing happens in the distributor with old fashioned weights and vacuum advance. Have a look inside the distributor for signs of carbon tracking or moisture. Replace the rotor button with a new one. You can use an XF Falcon one part number GB864. Replace the ignition module with a Bosch one, thread here.

There is a 4.6 stamped on the front of the crankshaft of a 4.6 so either drop the sump and have a look or put a bore scope up the sump drain hole and have a look.

Or take out a spark plug and measure the stroke which is 82 mm (3.2 in).
