How many k's?
Hey guys.
I just need a little advice on this oil leak.
It's leaked since I got the Disco but as I have recently fitted a Roof Top Tent for the Dry season and I've been loaded up recently on a weekend trip, I have found it leaking a bit more.
I'm pretty sure it's coming from the round cover on the rear of the transfer. It covers the rear of the main input shaft. I'm wondering if this cover has a seal or is there a seal on the shaft that might be stuffed.
Happy Days.

It's just a gasket on the older style LT230 and just a silicone bead on the later ones like yours. I think the cover has the input shaft rear bearing carrier in it IIRC, but it should just come straight off.
Oh, and don't be tempted to stick a gasket in there - it will act like a shim and change the preload on the input shaft bearings. Just remove, clean, bead of goo, then reinstall.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
As Gav says, it also preloads the bearing. The cover you see is retained by the 6 bolts. These bolts also retain another housing that supports the bearing outer race. This is located by two countersunk bolts initially and then further clamped in place by the cover and its 6 bolts. You will need to remove the cover and then the race carrier and seal between both or the leak will remain. Its not a big job, and not a job where you can loose bits into boxes. With both the cover and the race carrier removed, you will be able to slide the transfer box input gear out and see what the gearbox output splines are like and the mating splines within the gear you removed.. If your gear has cross drilled holes then the splines should be good. If not, then there'll prob be a bit of what looks like dried grease in there. Clean it all out and refit with some nevercease on the splines. There is a product called 'Bluemax' that I rate highly as a sealer. As Gav also said, if there's a gasket in there, replace it.![]()

Hi joel
Your model lt230 has only the 6 bolts holding thr cover and bearing retaining plate on, and you will have a drilled input gear so no need to remove it to check. Just undo the bolts, remove cover and plate, clean and reseal. Before removing it make sure to mark the 12 o'clock position as the bolt holes are not equidistant on the pcd.
