Clutch in a Defender

I read in the Haynes workshop manual that to emove the clucth you need to first remove either the gearbox, or engine. 8O They suggest the engine is easier... 8O

Obviously not a job to be taken lightly.

Touch wood, I haven't needed (and won't need) to do this, but my father in law apparently had to replace his series 2a clutch plates on Fraser or Moreton Island - many years back. Had to get the parts flown in, and fix it at the top of the beach.

Presumably he didn't have to remove the engine to do this, so I presume the series trucks are quite different to the 'fenders in this respect ?

Can any work be done on a Defender clutch w/out requiring removal of said parts. :?:
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

No, and I always take the engine out for a clutch job. As you can sit the engine up at waist height on the workshop bench to work on it.
A clutch usally only takes less than a day to do but, thats with all the correct equipment and parts.

True pleasure of owning a rover comes when repairs are required in the scrub.

Don't really know how cramped the unders are of the 'fender but with the series the gearbox can be slid back and is enough to get at the clutch.....well could on mine (about 5in of gap). Usually the imput shaft slides back into the splines easily if they are lined up properly on reassembly (dummy shaft until the pressure plate is tight) which makes it easier than motor out.

With the engine out method I would have thought it would be asking for leaks to develop (by the time a clutch is due everything else has gone stiff and brittle) and be harder as there's two points to line up, engine mounts and bellhousing studs, on reassembly. Could be wrong, often am it seems.

ONE OR THE OTHER WILL NEED TO COME OUT BECAUSE THE CLUTCH IS IN BETWEEN THEM. THEY WEIGH ALMOST THE SAME (ENGINE AND BOX) BECAUSE THE TRANSFER CASE IS ON IT. IT USED TO TAKE TWO OR THREE PEOPLE TO ALIGN AND FIT THE BOX WHICH WAS SITTING ON THREE TROLLEY JACKS. BLOODY HEAVY!! THE JOB WAS ALWAYS DONE ON THE FLOOR ON STANDS. IF MY CLUTCH GOES I WILL PAY SOMEONE TO CHANGE IT. MY MONEY IS NOT WORTH MY HEADACHES...

Clutch

Gotta get me a new avtar I think thats wot its called

Clutch

Rangie, civie defenders, series, drop the box, eaiser than removeing the engine have done heaps of them on the shed floor
axle stands standing on rims to get the rear high enough to work with room fan an shroud off to let the motor tilt.
G/box transmission jack, box out old clutch out new one in box back in 4-6 hours

Army style 3.9 disel and box take out the engine the bell houesing bolts bolt up through the engine side so a lot eaiser to pull the motor

easy job but you do need a dummy shaft......or if you hav.nt got one a bit of broom handle workes as well

thats why the surpreme being put sliding windows in series landies.

shut doors, open windows, slide lump of pipe or half a tree between doors, add chain block, trolley jack underneath and walah!

move the gearbox back a few inches, replace clutch.

it's all over before tea time....

Tried that trick and bent the window channels on a series 2 to the point we couldn't shut the windaz.

Take the door tops off and it works heaps well and only adds 10 mins to the job.
