Batteries run in parallel: in this case, OK or not OK?

I thought I’d start a new thread about this. I asked two companies selling batteries the following question:

I have two Delphi Freedom 12V / 110Ah / 800CCA / RC 195 mins. in my Land Rover Defender Td5. These batteries are connected in parallel with a simple on-off cut-out switch in the circuit. One battery is good, one not so good and I want to replace the poorer one with a 100Ah / 900 CCA Yuasa Silver YBX 5019. * Are the specifications of this Yuasa close enough to those of the Delphi for me to run the two in parallel without problems? I am always very careful to separate the two batteries when parked and join them when the engine is running.

    One replied as follows:

"You can't fit this battery or any other than the same type on your Landrover, unless you are changing both."

    That sounds pretty definite! 110Ah / 800CCA / RC 195 mins. run with a 100Ah / 900 CCA Yuasa Silver YBX 5019. "No way", they're telling me.

The other said (first): “Batteries can be very different, as long as they are the same chemistry. The same chemistry is match a flooded with a flooded, AGM with AGM, Gel with Gel, etc. Otherwise you are good.”

And then, later, regarding the 100Ah / 900 CCA Yuasa Silver YBX 5019: Of course a perfect match [with a Delphi 100 Ah/ 800 CCA]. Same age and same size is always best, but yes, I believe you would not have any trouble running those in parallel.

It seems to me that both these opinions can't be right, so I'm somewhat puzzled. Can a 110 Ah / 800 CCA be safely run with a 100 Ah / 900CCA without causing damage or other ill-effect to either battery?

Hi bamberg and the first battery you mentioned is a 12v lead acid battery.

The second battery you mentioned is a 12v lead acid battery.

So yes they can be parallel wire and you will not have a problem.

It is as simple as that.

There is not one single documented event where someone has paralleled dissimilar 12v lead acid batteries and had a problem that you would not find if you had identical 12v lead acid batteries parallel wired.

Mythical suggested problems relating to paralleling dissimilar lead acid batteries are nothing more than urban myths.

    Thanks Divesafe
It's good to see this one out in the clear.

I find with 12V electrics there seems to be A LOT of miss information even when your talking to so called experts.
One will say one thing and the next will say the exact opposite. How can this be possible?
Electricity only conforms to one set of rules.

As Tim said - no dramas. I run an N70 lead acid cranking battery and a 100AH AGM deep cycle together in parallel without issue. Switching between them is just a 20 amp switch i stuck in there - which must cop a flogging sometimes as i know the deep cycle draws over twice that for a while when it is discharged a fair way, but that's another story. Both batteries fully charge from the alternator and work as they should.

There's too many people out there that seem to over think this sort of stuff, or make **** up to Make themselves sound like experts - usually to extract more $$$ from you.

Hi again Benz, you and bacicat are right on the money.

There are so many companies cashing in on the fact most people don’t understand the automotive electrical field and these companies use this to their benefit.

The problem is limited, in the most part, to Australia, because we do not have mandatory standards for the automotive electrical industry.

If we had the same MANDATORY standards the electrical ( 240vac ) industry had, most of these crooked companies would never have come into existence or would have been force to fold.

I manufacture gear for the electrical industry and you would not believe the standards that have to be met and I’m all for those stringent standards, but as above, shame the same does not apply to the automotive electrical industry.
