    Discovery Problems

I have a 2000 Discovery TD5. Just recently two problems have occurred that I need help with, please.

    Problem 1
Any time that I am driving along at moderate acceleration (NOT under high acceleration) the engine is surging all the time. Not a great deal but I estimate approx. 25 to 35 revs when using either the foot or cruise control makes no difference.

    Problem 2
When I take off for the first time each day the gearbox will not change into top gear. It is doing approx. 3,000 rpm at 80 kph. If is stop, turn the engine off, wait 5 seconds then start the car again and drive off it seems to be fine, but if I don't stop and just keep driving it will not change into top gear no matter how far I drive.

Could those that know more about Disc's (and that's everybody else except me) please help b4 this vehicle drives me up the wall.

    Hello,
Having guess about your troubles firstly the surging could be a number of things, not necessary in any order, waste gate stuck, injector harness needs replacing, or your fuel pump. First change the filters. These are the most recurring problems but could be a combination of many, have you access to a Nanocom or similar ??
As for your gear box the engine has to get to operating Temp before engaging the TC lock up. Simple things first like check the XYZ connection, and all others to gear box ECU you really need to hook up to a diagnostic and look at the results.

As per above, my 2001 TD5 did the exact same thing in terms of surging. After a few weeks of this the fuel pump let go completely (30m from the intersection to my apartment block ). However I only know how to check it when it is caput. This was after replacing the injector harness and checking the ECU for oil.

All of the above! plus maybe have a look at your turbo modulator valve.Notorious for surging issues.little black box just under the air inlet pipe.Check that all the tubes to it,3 from memory are intact with no splits etc.
It is not a pricey item to replace if in doubt.

Geez he has got a lot to check..

The MAF caused the issue on mine.Continual surging.

Also the Auto will not change into 4th until the engine temperature gets to midway on the gauge.
