Tyres for a Defender

I'm up for new tyres on the defender and was wondering whether anybody has any suggestions as to what to fit.

I would reckon current usage is around the 70/30 on/off road with majority of the on road sorter trips.

I'm not after mud tyres just a good allrounder leaning towards the off road bias (pretty tall order I suppose).

Given that BFG ATs are not specified for 5.5in rims I've ruled these out (at least until I get some different rims)

Bushie,

Another cousin  has just put Kumhos on his Defender.

He seems well pleased.

I use olympic steeltrek, which is what the aus army use. I think they are great. Just a little noisy on the black stuff but not as noisy as the fender anyway so it dont matter.
I buy them second hand from the defence at a tyre place called Ringtread Tyres. for $80 each fitted. about 40-50% tread left. Pretty good i reakon. dont know how much they are brand new going to find out but. from bridgstone i think.

Down here, steeltreks (olympic) are about $250 a tyre, and not many places have them.

I'd be looking at the Bridgestone 604V if I were you bushie

Well I've just put 5 Goodyear ATs onto the Defender as well as getting 4 Michelin muddies (4X4-O/R XZLs) I was given fitted onto rims, so now have 6 very good tyres and 4 muddies at 40%-50% on rims. Hopefully they will do me for a while or until I can come across 4/5 disco steels at the right price.

(Wranglers)(Michelins)

The Michelins retail at around $350 ea, so I'm happy with them and the Wranglers were $190 ea

No thanks at this point I'll have to lay low for a while, 5 tyres and rego/insurance at the end of the month is a tad expensive.

I take it your mates defender rims are not the 5.5 inch as BFGs are specified as min 6" rim.
