Check your wires to the speedo transducer on the rear output extension of the transfer box.
If these are all good then it is likely the transducer.

G'day!
The speedometer on the Disco has given up the ghost today. Whilst driving, it simply stopped, needle at the left hand corner, not moving. The odometer doesn't move either. With only a couple of hours at hand before being forced to head off to work I could not investigate into the cause. As I won't be at home for a couple of weeks and hence will not be able to do a decent investigation I want to ask for your combined expertise in order to locate the probable fault, allowing me to order the parts necessary for fixing the fault in advance. As the truck is due for it's annual roadworthy inspection soon I will have to fix the problem as I'll get a straight "fail" otherwise.
The vehicle in question is a 1995 Discovery Tdi withe the R380-gearbox and about 340.000 kms on the clock. The speedo had been working faultlessly all the time since I purchased the car. Any suggestions??? Ta!

It can be annoying depending on your tools and access.
It's only one bolt to remove, however the transducer can be tight to remove, especially if lots of mud caked around.
Removal of rear shaft and hand brake assembly gives full access if the transducer becomes troublesome or your tools/ hands/ patience are wanting.
You don't have to fully dismantle the hand brake, just remove the drum and then the 4 back plate bolts and swing it out the way.
Here is a pic of the culprit in situ.note this one is damaged missing the top cover/ shroud.

If you end up removing the shaft it is only one drive flange nut to consider the output shaft seal too.
