Got a 110, especially an '02 onwards model? You may be interested in this:

Rob seems like a good set up. The mods you suggest would make a good carrier even better.
However I've never had any problems with the rear door/hinges on my Defenders. 300tdi now Xtreme. And I have used both on some rough tracks. Last year I travelled across the Anne Beadel Hwy and Simpson in the 300. Fully loaded up with fuel and water, this was before they put in the fuel stop and IMHO ruined a great trip I allowed 6 weeks in total as I knew from previous trips that things would be rough. I still managed to sheer off the screws to the passenger side front door lock plate , and thrash out the front uni joint. However no problems with the rear door, or dust (windows up + slow speed ) Have also done the trip in a Hilux (93) and a Pajero (96 and again in 97) I hate using black top As the track was then, not so well travelled it was not nearly as rough. However both vehicles suffered from the rough tracks. In particular the Paj. Both vehicles had dust ingress to some degree.
Anyhow good post about a carrier that may suit some. Particuly if the mods can be done to make things a little easier to use.

Thanks Tyrepower (any significance with the chain of shops?)

When researching Defenders I found that the rear door was likely to be a problem, so I have taken pre-emptive action. As a result, I've had no issues but maybe I didn't need to do it! Still, it's an improvement overall, albeit $700, and that was self-fitting.

I was also told about the track rod, and sure enough, I bent one and now have a heavy-duty one instead!
