    Defender timing belt

Hi all My 97 defender has 75000k's and I have been told that i should replace the T belt at 80 000k's. Is this right? My old toyota was 100 000k's. Is the T belt a difficult job for a compitant spanner spinner or a specialist job? Any thing else require doing, or worth doing at the same time??

    Thanks hep appreciated.

    Hi Ben
I do my own on my mitsi trytoo diesel. As long as you have a manual to guide you it should be well in your ability if you are a competent home mechanic. The mitsi has timing marks as long as they are all lined up all is ok.A mitsi is slightly more complicated as it has 2 timing belts,1 for the cam and a second for the balance shaft.I dont think landy diesels have this "feature" if thats what you call it.

    Hi ben
Just to add.If you do go ahead and do it yourself, when you have the belt in place and ready to put the cover on,I test mine by cranking it over bit by bit with the starting solenoid disconnected on the injector pump. This ensures the motor cant start and makes sure a valve isnt going to have an intimate affair with a piston if you have installed the belt with the timing marks out.

I made some enquiries the other day, and apparently yes, the job should be done at 80000. Apparently around $700 to get someone to do it for you.

    have a look at http://www.difflock.com/servicing/300tdi-t...elt/index.shtml
if you want to do it yourself (looks fairly comprehensive).

    Timing belt

It is advised to do the belts at about 80000. The full set of workshop manuals are available in the download section on this site if you are of the mechanical type. Its not to difficult.

    Hi
A lot of that $700 would be used up in the time needed to remove and replace the radiator etc that are in the way.Mechanics charege like wounded bulls.

FWIW - You can never do the cam belt too often!

You should do it roughly every 70-80k or approx every 5yrs (whichever the sooner).

It is a fairly easy job but there are a couple of little tricks and it is made a lot easier with the correct tools.

Although they say 80k intervals, most who have had the upgrade kit fitted previously have found little wear on the belt so 100k+ is not unreasonable . Going to do mine when i get the time and i have done 120k since last belt and it still goes like train.
