Have a look at the post byrmp re wheel carrier for his Defender. You might get some ideas to use on your build.
Has anyone had a spare wheel carrier made up- I have priced a Kaymar through ARB and at over $900 I won't be getting one. I checked out the Opposite Lock one and reckon I could get one made up for way less. I was thinking approx 2 metres of 150x100 rhs ($40 per metr), a trailer stub axle rated to 400kg ($15). bearing kit for stub axle ($30) and labour for the cutting and welding to put it all together. Has anyone done this sort of thing, advice etc would be greatly appreciated before I spend any money. Cheers,
Pullsy

If it's for a Defender, I wouldn't bother. You can get a Bearmach carrier from Karcraft in Sydney for less than $500.
Pictures of the Bearmach jobbie are in my album here

Pullsy,
You're pretty well on the mark with the home made job.
Here's a shot of the mine (I didn't make it).

Both sides operate identically.
There is also a tailgate strut attached to each side to:
1) aid opening
2) prevent opening too far
Each side is held down by a latch (similar to toolbox latches).
Because the original tail lights are obscured, additional lights have been moulded into the bar. This is the weekest point, as I found out when I backed into a tree after missing a turn off.
Thanks all for the tips. Ralf what you have got is similar to what I envisaged with a wheel carrier on one side and a twin jerry holder on the other. I am still searching for the old post on this topic and have got some info from other sites as well. Thanks again,
Pullsy
Gday Pullsey,
My father in law and I made a carrier each, which work quite well. Here are a couple of pics for ya. The most expensive bit of the whole lot were the locking catches which off memory were about $98.00.
They werent too hard to make but look the biz with the black powder coat.
Good luck with yours, if you have any questions just e-mail me!!

the catches look very similar to those used on early 40 series cruisers might be cheaper to get a carrier off one of those second hand
from where they have been dumped in the bush of course!!
not as reliable as a landies i guess.
I bought one of these from Paddocks in the UK for GBP100 (AUD250) plus the freight - so almost doubles the price!!!Originally posted by Defender200Tdi

Yep, that's what I paid, plus about $20 odd for freight to Adelaide. Just over $460 delivered to my door IIRC.
As I said, photos of inside and outside, open and closed, are all in my album.
