    Head gasket??????????????

    Hi guys
My landy stalled twice on the way to work today, not normal. When I got to work I opened the bonet for a quick look and see the LPG converter is iced up like a freezer, definately not normal, should be hot.I shut the bonet thinking the LPG is playing up.
When I get home it stalls again as I pull into the driveway.
Further investigation reveals the converter is iced up again, low coolant level, water isnt circulating thru the converter as a result.
I also note the top of the radiator is bulging around the radiator cap,and with the cap off a fair amount of bubbles are coming out of the top of the radiator.
I assume that the head gasket is leaking and pressurizing the system,or an exhaust valve has started wearing thru into the water jacket in the head,(Is this possible in a 202 holden????)as a result of valve recession due to ULP/LPG.
When I bought this landy the owner said it was converted to the 202 and LPG from diesel, the motor was a purpose built LPG motor and basically has only ever run on LPG(according to the owner)and I have only put about 1/2 a tank of petrol thru it in the 18months or so Ive owned it.It has a flashlube lube kit.
At least its only a short drive to work until I can find the time to get in and rip the things head off!!!!!
    Any ideas guys?????

Do a compression check on the cylinders. That should identify if it is a head gasket or valves. Low compression in only one cylinder is likely to be valves. Low compression in two (or more) adjacent cylinders is likely to be the head gasket.

    Thanks Moses
Will look into that before pulling the head off,the end result is the same it will have to come off!!!!!! At least it may help in a diagnosis.

Could try a bottle of chemiweld if you think it's not that bad rather than head off. Ugh... hate the thoughts of taking the head off, what a bugger of a thing to need at anytime.

Bulging Radiator, bulk bubbles in radiator filler neck, frozen gas converter, are all text book signs of head gasket failure. Holden 202's are pretty bullet proof when it comes to valve guide wear thru to the water jacket.

If it hasn't overheated in a big way, you should be lucky enough to get away with just a head gasket and not need to machine the head.

With the 202's having overhead valves and pushrods, the removal of the head is no big deal. Adjusting all the valves is a nuisance but not a difficult job.
