Overheating series six cylinder

Evening All, Thanks for the replies on my last round of questions. I've just been surfing the net and on one site they mention LR sixes overheating but theres no further detail. The engine in mine runs pretty hot and i thought that the it was either in need of a good clean out of the cooling system or checking the timing, maybe a dud thermostat. Is the overheating / running hot typical of the standard 6 and are there any other problems with these engines i should know about?
Thanks
Bill

Hi Bill
I once owned one of these beasties. It may not be yur answer to your problem but the previous owner told me the exhaust valve clearances were a cause of overheating(in his experience I add).
I made it a part of my maint to adjust them every 4 or 6 months. They are hiding in that rocker cover on the side of the motor!!!!!!! The inlets are up in the head where they belong!!!!!!!

Valves were apparently the weak point of the rover 6 cylinder. regular adjustment the cure so i'm told.

that said, it never hurts ro give the cooling system a flush

Thanks, i'll check the valves, i assume they need to be set to the standard minimum clearance spec?
Andy i just noticed your sign off......you're going to put in a 302 8O ???? Is that going to be registerable? Or will it be a strictly drag strip rig
Thanks

Hi Bill
"The Toy" is intended to be road registered "ONE DAY".Ive got permits from the WA transport people.
Money/time/motivation is a bit of a problem at the moment.
I keep seeing those rock crawlers in 4WD Monthly mag,it wouldnt take alot to convince me to turn it into one of those!!!MONEY WOULD STILL BE A PROBLEM ops: ops: ops: ops:

Well i gotta say i'm impressed. How hard has the conversion been so far? Got any specs? And how on earth does the WA rego mob approve it? I always thought they were one of the toughest.

Hi Bill
The auto conversion was easy,I got a Seatons Engineers(WA) conversion kit,it involves removing the fordC4 output housing and shortening the shaft,re splining it and rehardening.Their new short output housing is identical on its output shaft end to the landy 4 speed so it bolts up to the transfercase. The overall length of the converted C4 and belhousing isnt much longer than the landy gearbox and bellhousing.
Using a Cleveland motor hasnt left a lot of room in the left side of the engine bay,a cut out is needed in the chassis rail to allow for a remote mounted oil filter.I fitted a new front crosmember then cut the old one off at the steering relay putting gussets in to re-inforce the relay.I have a HQ/Z holden Statesman V8 radiator at the moment.
I have had the work done sofar inspected by an engineer,he was very happy with my work and will pass all welding etc.
The TRANSPORT people are dead set WALLYIES(no offence to anybody called Wally!!!!),they tell you one thing but dont give you all the info. They said I could lift the body as high as I liked as long as it was safe,in the inspectots words,"Landys are very stiff so we dont have much of a problem with body lifts,Hilux Surfs are a huge problem with roll-overs".So I ask the guy how does 4 inches in the body sound? OK,as long as it is safe, was the reply. So I went ahead with 2 inches in the suspension and 4 inches for the body. When the Engineer looked at my work he said he had checked the requirements for the bodylift,up to 2 inches in suspension is OK,up to 2 inches in body is OK,over 2 inches requires a lane-change test, which in short will cost me thousands of$$$$$$$ and a brand new tojo or nissan station wagon will fail,so I have no chance,so I have to re-do the body lift to 2 inches.A HEAP OF WORK!!!!!!!!

what type of cooling fan does it have?

I think the fan is solid mounted actually, i'll take another look and if it's vicious i'll free it up. Thanks for the tip!
Andy i think i found a website with your v8 rover on it? That clevo fits well i would've thought it was too wide. Do you have a website for that mob that makes the transfer case adapter? I've got a spare 327 & TH350 sitting in the shed, maybe i could buy an old 2a and stick that in.....then again i may be gettin in too deep here!
