Caltex oils formulated especially for land rover

Hi All, I left a reply under the dont beleive the hype- gear oils topic but i thought i would create a new topic to get everyones attention. I recently went through the same dilemma finding a suitable oils for my 98 TDi Discos diffs , transfer case, engine and particularly the gear box.
I went to repco to buy 20ltr drums of oil to service all of the above components. Castrol technical support said that disco gear boxes, and defenders presumably have problems with the gear boxes if the correct oil is not used, and i mean CORRECT. the sale assistant recommended VMX 80 but i asked if they could ring castrol and confirm it, the technical support officer said not to use VMX 80 and to ONLY use Castrol Syntrans, this was all good until they told me 20ltrs would cost $320. Not being happy with the price i said i would thin k about it and went outside to ring land rover in bathurst. The informed me that land rover has Caltex formulate an oil especially for land rover manual gear boxes, its called MTF 94 and comes in a plain white drum with land rover written on the sid, it costs a more reasonable $136. As for diffs and transfer cases they recommened 80W/90 Caltex Gear oil. and for the TDi engine the recommend Caltex Havoline Semi-Synthetic. After all this I bought 20ltrs of each oil and a 20ltr drum pump for around the same price as one drum of syntrans. Caltex wins my vote, if land rover trusts them so do i. They are a reputable brand as is mobil, castrol shell etc and the oils are great value. I advise all land rover owners to check caltex out, i am happy with the oils they make all components silk smooth and the car runs like clock work. Thanks Matt

Thats correct. In theroy the spec of VMX 80, Penrite Xtra lite, and Valvoline dura gear 75/85 all meet the LR spec, in practice they seem to provide different syncro performance this would be due to the additive package, I suspect that all would lube ok. The Caltex oil is in made to an LR spec for LR.
It's important to understand also that oils aren't oils and that in most cases quality synth oils are better than mineral oils ie Syntrans would be a supieror oil to Cal MT94 and would likly exceed the LR spec.
I run Castrol SAF XA 75/140 in my diffs, I could run normal 90 hypoid but choose to pay more for the synth for aditional high temp stabillity and extended drain intervals. Synth oils while rated to the same SAE weights are actually quite thin and flow better when cold. SAF-XA is has a reccomended drain interval of up to 300 000k in Eaton and Rockwell diffs (truck stuff), it also what Ford and Holden use as a factory fill in HSV and FPV cars, also used in V8 supa car Hollinger 6 speed boxes, Jag XJ220 Mercs at Le Mans etc.

For the Transfer case I run Penrite 1Oths 75/90 race diff oil but you could use Castrol syntrax. Again normal 90 EP would be ok as speced by LR.

To date my car has always run Valvoline dura gear in the main box but I have been considering Syntrans at the next change to see if cold changes in winter are any better.

For me I don't mind paying for some extra High temp stabillity of synth oils. The mate Brad just smoked his Disco box due to a slightly low oil level, worked it hard, the oil cooked, went black melted the first motion shaff bearing, layshaft bearings and stuffed the first motion gear and layshaft front gear. $1200 in bearings gears from MR automotive (LR list price from the layshaft cluster is $1300 alone)BY the way this box was only 20k old, so everyone go and check your oil this weekend.

Hi Shaunp, thanks for the info, oils are something we just shouldn't mess with, and the quality of oils is directly related to component life and reliability. I guess though its all a matter of what is in our price range, maybe one day I will be able to buy the syntrans, it should be available in 5 litres so we dont have to fork out big dollars to by 20, buying five 0nes in quite costly.
