Can't help you with a range, but can tell you that my 130 at 327K had the issue.
WA VIN, engine s/n 16L656673B if that helps.

I keep reading here about problems with big end bearings in 98 300 Tdis.
Sometimes there are vague references to a VIN range and even reference to WA VINs.
Can anyone be more specific about the range of VINs within which the problem occurs?
On a more cheerful or optimistic note, is there evidence of large numbers of 300 Tdis in that range reaching 300,000 without big end failure? Is it only a tiny number of engines in that range that have problems?

Might be the last 6 months of 98. My 98 110 did the big end bearings at 230k, ate the crank. TdiRick caught his (freaky bastard!) Both of ours are last 6 months of 98 build.
Mine was getting full log book service every 10k without question.
No sign of a problem doesn't mean there isn't a problem though....
The previous owner of my 130 was probably unaware the shells were delaminating too....
For what it costs to replace them, I don't understand why anyone with a 98ish 300tdi would risk waiting waiting for symptoms to confirm if their vehicle is affected.
Good chance a 300tdi sump at 300K+ is leaking a bit, so pull it off, throw in a new set of big end bearings (< $100) and seal the sump back up.
2 jobs done at once.

hi mine was registered may 98 maybe I dodged a bullet, maybe ring bruce davis or mr automotive.
my vehicle has worked pretty hard a lot of 4th gear towing with well over a ton shame about the leaking t seal and vacuum pump keep us posted chers
My 300TDi is a late 94 so not relevant as far as the bearing delamination issue is concerned but at 300k kms it did have very worn main and big end bearings. My advice, like others have said, is change them anyway. If they aren't delaminating they will probably be reaching their useby date anyway.
