how strong is the bolt that holds them through the chassis?

They are not rated so you probably won't know for sure ... but if you look at them .. they put a 4.2T shackle to shame. The bolt is high tensile so you are probably looking at a breaking strain more than you will ever be able to put on the vehicle. Also if you use a bridle you will always half the load on each point ... a must in my book.

if i was to fit a couple of those eyelets (the type most semis have on their bullbars) to the front of my bullbar with a thick steel plate behind, will this be strong enough for a snatch recovery....?[/quote]
Yup .. I'm sure it will. Although the issue has been raised whether they are legal? (some law on protruding items on the front of a vehicle for pedestrian safety) My concern was how they would impact the fitting of an electric winch ... the Defender bullbar only takes a low mount so be mindful of that.
I am fortunate in that I have an ARB bullbar on the Defender which has the eyelets for fitting a shackle. The genuine LR bullbar apparently does not have these eyelets.
There has been some discussion that these are not rated recovery points, but ARB have assured me they are :?
The only problem I can see with the eyelets and the JATE rings is their location being too low, especially once the vehicle has become stuck. We had this problem only last weekend.
I think a good solution to this problem is the Dixon-Bate type of tow-jaw or something similar which can be bolted to the bullbar or factory bumper. The same type of jaws were used on all the Camel Trophy vehicles and now the G4 vehicles. Certainly rated and in a good convienent location for recovery.
The only problem I can see is with the NSW RTA next time it comes to a rego inspection, as it does protrude beyond the line of the front bumper  :?

My eyebolts didnt protrude any further than the winch fairlead and they were rounded and smooth unlike the dixon-bate fittings, so in theory they should pass the NSW RTA requirements, spose you just have to speak to them for sure.
If the ruling is for nothing to protude past the bumper line these some guys are in for real trouble, ever seen how far some of those jumbo driving lights stick out on some bars.
Regards Glen.
G'day Glen
I recently had an 'interesting' experience with the RTA for rego inspection, see the following link for the full story:
http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Foru...c63032b4c7658a6
In short, I had real difficulty getting a servo to approve my vehicle because my bullbar has the winch brace and fairlead protruding beyong the line of the bumper!!!
From my experience, even while you may comply with the 'letter of the law' those doing the inspections are under considerable pressure, or don't want to risk being caught approving vehicles which may not comply.
Back to recovery points, do you have any pics of your points???
This is what the RTA says:

Thanks for posting that Mahn -- I have now saved that and will print one off for when I require my next rego inspection.
It would be interesting to see whether the Dixon-Bate would pass this test.
If you want some REAL recovery hooks I can supply some awesome hooks powder coated to your colour of choice for around $30 - depending on where you live. The HT bolts are extra.
I wouldn't use the ****y little ones that you can buy from a 4b shop. They are rated, sure, but I have seen them bent out of shape.
The ones I have will not bend. And I guarantee you will love em.
If anyone is interested, I can PM you some pics.
Yes go armed.Quote:

I figure that if you are given a notice on your bull bar then ultimately the court of appeal is the RTA. The RTA giveth and the RTA taketh away and the threat of taking this further would test the inspection stations. They are scared of passing something that doesn't comply so they should also be scared of failing something that does comply. The law works both ways.
Also interesting is that Standards Australia is working on this and I will check this out.
At the end of the day the monkeys see bull bar and think monkey bar.
Well micka pm me some photos and I will publish them here.Quote:
