Selector Problems
Hi guys, totally new user to this forum and want to jump right to the point. I have never needed the help from a forum such as this due to the fact that I've never had a problem with my '93 V8 Discovery untill yesterday
. The question that I have is: gear selection in the 5 speed manual box became suddenly more and more vague tring to find gears especially 3rd. My wife drives the car daily and she came home last night and said it had a huge problem. I took it for a drive and the gear stick seemed real strange. It constantly aligned itself to the left side adjacent to reverse. I gave it a few good shakes and then the hole thing came loose and no selection at all. Crept it home and started removing things. First thing I noticed was that the up turned flange on the metal plate below the shifter centralising springs was snaped clean off. Although this would not have had anything to do with the no selection bit (easily fixed with the mig). Next step, loosen off associated bolts and remove the shifter/selector rod. Great looks like the selector yoke (if you call it that) has completely fallen off and is just sitting inside the gearbox. Now my problem..... the PLASTIC??? cage that holds the pivot ball in place inside this yoke is broken and it also looks like it's supposed to have something on one of the ends to keep it in place. i.e one end has a shoulder (bottom side) and the top has a groove around it like there is ment to be a clip of some sort to stop it falling out. I dont have this "clip"( i think the gearbox sump owns it) and the carrier/cage is broken Can someone help a newbie to this forum but owner for 10 years locate this part if its available. I live in Sydney and any help would be greatly appricated.. Andymac

Hi Andymac,
This post relates to my similar experience:

The tab breaking is not unusual.
But as for the rest I can't help.
I think though that I have a later model gearbox LT380 as opposed to the LT70.
Maybe there is a downloadable manual for your gearbox which will assist.
I'll look and let you know.

Not a good thing to have happen. Suppose that means gearbox out and up on the bench if you are confident.
Some of us have been there, a minority more than once.

Dad had a similar thing happen in his '93 disco, where the gearstick wouldn't centre itself. Think it turned out to be a broken spring mechanism, but can't remember exactly how he fixed it, will ask him when i see him.
For parts and advice in the sydney area there are haeps of good options, i often used graeme cooper in newtown.

The plate with the tabs broke on my '88 R/Rover. From memory the plastic socket into which the gearstick locates just sat in a hole in the selector and once the gearstick was re-attached became secure. There may not be a clip in your gearbox.
Once I had something (I can't remember what, but let's just call it a washer) fall into a SIII g/box. I drained the oil and flushed it out with metho or kero. Once it gets to the drain plug you can grab it with pointy nose pliers. Then just run the gearbox again with oild for a short while (to rinse it) and replace that oil again. If that works, it saves you pulling the box out. Jack up the car (or at least one wheel on each axle) and see if you can rotate the box in gear by hand - turn a tail shaft while someone depresses the clutch. Try it in each gear to check if anythings stuck on any gear. If there's any obstruction in the box you should be able to feel it.
Hope this helps.
