D2a td5 manual no drive???
Hi guys, the other night I put my foot down to pass someone, left disco in 5th instead of going faster it just free revved. Checked neutrals etc on side of road and got a tilt tray lift home. There was no noise as it happened, the car will sit idling and without using clutch I can easily run through all the gears, to me it seems to be a gearbox input shaft problem, but? .Before I jump in and pull the gearbox out has anyone got any suggestions of something simple I may have missed? Clutch has about 75k on it flywheel changed at the same time using genuine parts. Transfer case seems to be in either high or low as I select them.
Any suggestions would be great
Thanks Keith

as you can select gears with the motor running and no clutch engaged, it would not be the input shaft but the clutch itself. Either the clutch plate centre has destroyed iteslf and is free wheeling IEm slipping big time or something a little more sinister like the pressure plate has lost spring pressure or at worst the flywheel bolts to crank have dislodged or broken. Apart from the slipping scenario, there would be rattly noises that would give an idea. If no rattly noises, then I am thinking the clutch is slipping via mechanical damage of some sort.
Cheers,
Jack.

No noises while it is running or when it happened, the clutch feels normal but it is hydraulic so may just feel that way
Thanks Keith

So, no abnormal noise that you have noticed and when you press the clutch pedal it feels normal. that would indicate the pressure plae is still intact but is not putting pressure on the clutch plate to complete drive from the engine to the gearbox.
Still don't think gearbox input shaft is the issue as this would create some rattling noise. Still points to the actual clutch plate slipping.
Had this issue on a 100 series 'cruiser in the workshop a few weeks ago, could select gears whith no clutch pedal engaged while motor was running, when stripping down, the centre of the clutch plate had come adrift from the rivets and provided no grip or noise.
the only way to tell what is going on is to remove the box and see what has let go
. At least a clutch kit is cheaper than a gearbox.
Just another thought I had, my disco is auto so don't know what type of flywheel is fitted to your car, if it is a dual mass flywheel and they are of the same design as the Toyo or Hyundai, then if the rubbers have let go that will also give no grip but I would expect some rattly noises.
Good luck with finding the cure...................

Fixed
I finally got time to pull the gearbox out, yes as landroverjack suggested the rivets had let go on the clutch plate so centre no longer attached to outer friction ring, Oh well at least a sort of easy fix and not to expensive
Thanks
Keith
