Tdi - revs surging at idle

I've just picked up a 98 tdi Discovery and am pretty new to the whole diesel thing - where are the spark plugs??? :?

Seriously though, at idle it kinda surges. The revs rise up and down about 100rpm and strangely I've noticed that one of the interior lights (on an aftermarket cruise control switch) also brightens and dims in time with the surging.

As the vehicle is under a statutory warranty i want to identify any issues now and get them sorted out before this runs out.

Not really sure where to start looking, whether its electrical or mechanical. I'm hoping not electrical coz i bought a tdi to stay as far away as possible from the prince of darkness.

    TIA.

what rpm is it idling at?

it maybe that the battery is less than perfect and the revs are a little low on the idle and that makes the lights pulse.

is the tacho showing the variance or is it something you can hear as well?

the tacho is driven by the alternator so if the alternator is dodgy it tends to show up first by making the tacho wobble a little.

mine idles at about 800 rpm and i find that a little low when i have the air on so was thinking of taking it up to 900-950.

Not exactly sure what its idling at, probably about 800rpm.

You can hear the pulsing and also see it in the tacho. The battery in it looks newish, but is only rated at 440CCA. I have a decent Exide sitting in the Rangie, i might swap them over and see if it makes a difference.

have you emptied the sludge filter at the back of the vehicle?

or replaced the fuel filter under the bonnet ?

i remember this topic coming up before i think so it may pay to do a search of the site...

on the drivers side, on the inside between the chassis rails, just before the rear wheel, is a sludge filter with a tap in the bowl so you can drain it.

Some 98's are fly by wire and have an ecu never worked one of this type so I'm not sure what it controls.

If you are going to clean this filter, make sure you get a spare drain plug before you start. They are made of nylon? and swell it will probably break or strip trying to get it out. Easiest to drop the whole bottom section off and give it a proper clean.
