    Oil leaking on rear rim (Dust cap? Seals? Breather?): Defender Puma

    G'day, g'day all! Tried searching through existing threads for any relevant insights on this issue, but couldn't locate anything. Please point me in the right direction if I have missed something (still getting a handle on the site search functionality).

    Recently returned from a trip around Tassie (highly recommended) and had tyres rotated and balanced. Since doing so I have noticed oil spilling on rear driver's side rim (and spraying over tyre, up into wheel arch, onto mudflap and suspension etc as the tyre as been turning over at speed).

    Prior to the trip I had to replace rear brake pads and discs, at which time I understand the bearings are supposed to be greased and repacked (had the team at Graeme Cooper carry out this work, been having the Defender serviced there for a few years now). I did note a little oil at this time but dismissed as being surplus from recent work. Wiped off, monitored and didn't notice any further leaks. Only now I have rotated the wheels, it's back and quite a bit worse than last time.

    Looks like the hub seal - if it is grease lubricated bearings this would indicate the axle seal is leaking, and the hub seal is not oil proof (but may well seal grease). It could be a failed seal, or a blocked axle breather, or both. My money is on a blocked breather, possibly with the seal having failed as a result, but loose (failing) bearings would also be likely to cause a seal failure.

    It would be easier to be certain where the oil was coming from with the wheel off. And when jacking it up check the wheel bearing play.

    No doubt the dust cap was knocked off when thwy refitted the wheel i'd say.

    Apologies on the tardiness in delivering my findings. You blokes had it in one: dust cap knocked off. Easy fix. 110 running a dream with no leaks... well, almost.
