Honestly, I can't see why not. It's not apart of the head bolts torquing so I would have thought it's ok.
Cheers

Hi All, I am replacing the head gasket on my Disco2 99 TD5 I have the head off without any major problems. I just wondered if the stud and nut on the front of the motor in the picture below can be replaced with a bolt. It was a bit of an effort to lift the head that far to remove it and i'm sure that it will be much more of a problem to get it back on.

Does it position the head gasket so it doesn't move when putting the head back on , if it doesn't than it should be able to be replaced with a bolt .
No, there is no clearance from the section of the head above it to get a bolt of the required length in.
Psimpson7, the voice of someone who has wanted to do the same by the sounds of thingsThanks for the guides on the head gasket replacement too. Getting it off went pretty well. Got to strip the head today and get it checked etc.

What torque is required on that stud, it looks like it tightens into alloy and the thread boss is not substantial.
Studs are installed at a much less torque than head bolts going into an iron cylinder block, what I'm getting at is that where that stud screws into that alloy cover, if you put a bolt in instead and torqued it to the same as the nut that goes on that stud, you may strip the thread. Most studs are screwed down till they stop and a light nip up.
You could always remove the stud for installation and fit it after the head is in place, I would check with a LR specialist and see what they have to say, Regards Frank.
No you couldn't. Its NOT possible. same issue as replacing with a bolt.
The only thing you could do, is remove the stud, insert it into the head from below before its fitted then screw a nut on the top of it to hold it into the head then screw it into the block using 2 nuts on the stud after the head was fitted with the stud and nut(s) lose in the hole, and from memory even that would be tight
So I'm assuming there is an overhang on the head that prohibits being able to get a straight shot at the top of the stud, never pulled a head off a TD5 so not familiar with this head, but it doesn't surprise me, must be a pleasure getting a torque wrench or angle gauge in there to do it up, good luck, Regards Frank.
I have been away for a couple of days, the head is back they pressure tested it and it was good, it was pretty flat and they took a couple of thou off to clean it up. I have to put the injectors and cam back in and hopefully get everything back together on the weekend. I also had them machine the exhaust manifold, much better chance of that sealing now.
It looked to me as though the head gasket had been done before, but they had used gasket gunk which had allowed the exhaust through into the coolant. I don't know anything about the history of this Disco as it was cheap and bought with the knowledge that it might need the head gasket done.
Hi Tank, yes as Psimpson7 said the head overhang is the reason for this being a stud, I can see that once I look at it. I was just trying to make it an easier lift back in place but I'm sure it will be OK, just have to get everything straight and lower it all straight for the length of that stud.

I'm not exactly sure why there's a stud there, but there'll be a reason. As long as the dowels are both in place (steel dowels not plastic), and the gasket is sat correctly, the head should slide over that easily. Have someone handy when you are positioning the head... It makes it a lot easier!![]()
