Hand throttle for Defender TDi 1996

I have a 1996 Defender Crew Cab Tdi 300. I have been wanting to instal a hand throttle as I drive long distances regularly.
Landrover do not supply such a beast and I have been unable to find an aftermarket hand throttle.
Can anyone help me with info on this. Maybe another brand modified to suit.

My only other option is an aftermarket cruise control I suppose but would prefer hand throttle.

for long distance driving a cruise control is safer. hand throttles werent designed for cruising. they were to keep the throttle applied when the
power-take-of was in use and there was no one in the vehicle.

i would definitely go the cruise control for this situation as you cannot release the hand throttle and brake quick enough in an emergency,
whereas with cruise control it deactivates as soon as you hit the brake or clutch. (not the roo in the middle of the road !! )

    Cruise control

    Thanks Tony and Lurch,

Do you have any knowledge of the best type of cruise for Defenders.

    Defender Hand Throttle (THROT-KIT) $130

Control your vehicle's revs during winching or rockcrawling with this Hand Throttle. This item is fitted to many older Defenders and was not intended by the factory to be used as hand throttle. Nevertheless, it is very suitable to being used as such. The Hand Throttle mounts to the factory brackets inside the steering column and provides a very factory appearance.

See more detail toward the bottom of that page.

I fitted an Australian-designed AP50 cruise control I bought from KMart to my '86 RR and it worked exceptionally well. In fact, it was better than the cruise control on my wife's VT Commodore Berlina (that she had at the time). I can highly recommend it. It was (at the time) about $160.

Do a Google search on AP50 cruise control for lots of comments on it.

For a manual car you need a shut-off switch on the clutch as well as the feed from the brake lights.

Manual choke cables make good hand throttles and I think invalids use a throttle grip a bit like a motor bike mounted off the steering column if you wanted to go that way.

Make up brackets to actuate the throttle pedal as your foot would. Very good for potholed roads, nice steady throttle rather than the usual jiggle after every hole.

Cruise control is a good option, however most work by magnetic pickup off one of the driveshafts. Problem is a good day in the scrub there's a good chance it won't work afterwards due to the gunk blocking the pickup.

Could be wrong, often am. :?
