Tyre Size

Ok
What tyres are you allowed to drive on the road in Aus (Queensland)

The reason behind this is on the wifes 90 we have 235/75 R16's which are fine as such standard.
But on mine i have Simex Extreme trekers 35" X 10.50 X 16. I heard some where that you can't have tyres on the truck more than 10% of what the manufacture put on it. Mine came with 205's. So i will be at about 28% larger.
Is this true or did someone make it up , and are my simex legal on the road in Aus.
Or should i put a set of "Normal" size tyres on
And are beadlockers road legal in Aus, or is running Large simex and beadlockers on the road down Brisbane high street really taking the ****

Cheers

AFAIK, beadlockers and simex tyres are both legal in australia.

Tyre sizes is another issue. I've heard about the 10% thing, but not heard a lot about.

have a look here http://www.bigred4x4.com/

Big Red (aka Shane) runs 35" tyres for touring. He's also a QLD local. If you like you can probably catch him either on his website or on the overlander forum where he is a regular. he should he able to help you out with a lot of the questions you have.

Hmm this is an interesting question Reads90 - one which i have seen you post before. Mate I would suggest you check the following - Australian Design Rules (ADR) the Queensland Roads authority, and your biggest stumbling block - insurance companies...

being that your vehicle comes from OS it will need to be placarded to comply with the ADRs' this is usually done by an engineer. He will be able to tell you what the go is with tyres.

There are plenty of blokes around running bead locks and big tyres - whether they are legal or insured - or covered by insurance is another thing.

But mate this is something that obviously is worrying you as you keep posting on it, - please take my advice and dont rely on hearsay and comment that is unless you get informed comment.

The main problem with this type of things is that legislation is always open to interpretation - what one inspecting officer sees as ok , a police officer might not, then you take it to an engineer who says something else.

If i were you - seeing the price of stuff I would probably buy a set of standards or plus 1 or plus 2 fitment and bring them with you. - but beware you might have to pay some type of tax on them when you get them here.

Oh and the other thing you need to check is the Tyre and Rim Association handbook - it will give you the legal drum in relation to all types of tyre fittings

Im not sure but Tyrepower - who frequents this site may have soething to do with tyres - I have been out of the tyre industry for some 8 or 9 years.

Regards

Mick

i would probably bring it in to the country with a set of stockies on it
and the simex in it.

there is no annual inspection in queensland for roadworthiness as there is in other states so i think insurance will be your biggest concern. they are fussier than women and look for any excuse to refuse insurance or paying
claims.

that way i can maybe buy the simex off you??????????????

Over here the Simex are road legal we think but the same as you with depends on the police man at the time. But as for MOT mine has been though 4 with the simex and they have no even mentioned them.
But over here the Beadlockers are not road legal. Not that a copper would not they were even if you hit him on the back of the head with them
I am thinking of buy a second hand set of tyres that we have on the wifes 90. Or a set of muds for road use for mine
Thanks for your help

AFAIK...

4WD's relate to the Light vehicle code of australia, which i think is very different to passenger cars.

You can increase track by 50mm, and increase tyre diameter by 25mm from the largest spec tyre / track made by the manufacturer.

ie - series had fitment of 9.00 x 16 which are approx 34 / 35 inches depending on the manufacturer of the tyre, so i can legaly run a 36 inch tyre on my car (which i do)

The track can be widened 50 from this spec, so thats a fair bit.

Also on beadlocks, mechanical beadlocks are illegal (so im told again!) but internals beadlocks themselves are legal. The only problems with the internals are that you have to drill an extra hole in the rim to allow fitment, which i have been told is illegal as you are modifying the rim...?

All this info may / may not be correct, it is only what i have been told, but i do know of cars that have Q78 super swampers (36 inch) engineered on their cars due to the 9.00 x 16 rule, and the fact that series cars dont need a speed / load rated tyre, as it wasnt a manufactures specifacation.

Ring the RTA / DOT / Victroads / What ever else they call themselves in different states / Approved Engineer.

Keep the simexs.

Dave.

Dave.
Far too vain for internal beadlocks

I run inner tubes therefore the internal bealocks (to my knowledge don't work with them)

Best advice yet . Find out who the authority is in QLD and give them a call, or in your case Reads send an E/mail. Ask them for the regs regardiing what your after. All states differ some what, so your best off finding out from the right people
