    Brass in tfer case

    While removing the seal on the front of the tfer case lt230 I have found about a dozen small brass shards any idea what would they have come from

    The only brass bits that I can remember are the selector forks.

    They are made of Bronze, but that is what the remains will be. Most people would describe it as Brass, just by its appearance.

    I have seen this issue on a lot of cases.

    Yup, center diff thrust washers. They usually disintegrate because the diff lock is not being selected the min you leave the black top. If you spin the wheels on just one axle without the diff locked, these little gears weld themselves to the cross shafts... These then break, and usually drive is retained, but with funny noises.. If you do strip the box, money is well spent fitting an Ashcroft one piece cross shaft (the original are a two piece and a weakness in the LT). Some will disagree, but I also shimmed up the two larger gears that drive the output shafts, as there was a huge amount of slop when re assembled. So far its withstanding 5.9 litres of Cummins power driving 255/100R16 (900's). The lesson learned... Always lock the center diff.. Even on a dirt road! Here's a pic of an Ashcroft Cross Shaft that's copped a flogging. The little gears have disintegrated but the cross is still in one piece!

    My transfer case had the same brass colored fragments.
    I've only owned the td5 for a short time and haven't done any off road driving as yet.
    Is there a chance of major transfer damage if I don't rectify this fault in the near future or can it be ignored?

    Hi Yorkie157.
    Welcome to the forum.. Ok, if you physically have chunks that have come out (like small fragments of egg shells), then it means that the center gear thrust washers have collapsed. There are 4. Without these thrust washers, the gears are allowed to move further out... meaning there's less of the teeth engaged... You're vehicle will still drive ok, but you would need to deal with it sooner rather than later. The risk is when the little cross pins break, as they have a habit of being forced out of the center diff and if a chunk gets between two meshing gears then 'bang' and no drive. Without the shims, these pins are more likely to break. Sorry its not the best news.heres what a std center diff looks like.
