Grinding noise from Defender
After going thru some deep muddy 'puddles' at defender warp speed (40km/h) I'v noticed a whining/grinding noise coming from the region of the aircon compressor. It's got steadily worse (hoped it'd go away ) over the last week, and if you turn the air con on it'd get really bad.
I read Ace's post from last week or so and sent him a pm, sounds like the same problem, a bearing in that area has probably crapped itself.
I understand the bearings cost about $20 and you need a hydrolic press to get the bearing in and out-which I don't have-so I won't have time to get it fixed tomorrow for saturday.
I really want to go up to Stockton on Sat, so if I steer clear of the using the aircon (not a problem thanks to the excellently designed front speed flaps ), ignore the problem and go sand driving for the day while turning the radio up to avoid the whining, any ideas as to the worst case scenario?
Also, is it an easy job to take this belt off and more imprtantly back on- bearing in mind I have minimal mechanic skills and only armed with a $2 k-mart tool kit?
Any timely advice would be great
Cheers
Alex

Is it a 300tdi or a 200?
I was able to remove the main serpentine and then aircon belt in mine without drama.
The bearing was removed from the tensioner pully without too much difficulty using a sturdy bench vice and an appropriate sized piece of tube and a lump hammer. The new was fitted similarly.
A press is not necessary.

The engine is a 300Tdi, I'm not too worried about getting the serpentine belt off, but is it just as easy to get back on?
Also, there's no way I can source a bearing for today, so if I were to take off the aircon belt for the day tomorrow, would this have any other undesirable consequences other than no aircon??

I'm heading off driving tomorrow morning and still not sure if I can take off the aircon belt.
If anyone could let me know if taking the aircon belt off has any undesirable effects that I don't know about, it'll save me from finding out the hard way!!

Alex,
The hardest part with the serpentine belt is relieving the tensioner.
The manual suggests removing the fan, but you need a special spanner for
that. I removed the belt on my own with a ring spanner (17mm I think) a
lever under the spanner off the water pump and a wedge to keep it
relieved off the radiator (difficult to describe). in reverse I found
that it was easiest to get all the top pulleys organised and then to
locate the belt on the main pulley from below.
As the Aircon belt drives only that so to leave it off is not a problem.
If you are in a hurry cut it. The belt cost about $25.00 to replace. Cheaper than the pulley letting go and spinning the belt through the power to the ac clutch.

if all it drives is the aircon compressor thats all it will affect
rip it off and go for a drive and enjoy your day.
if it runs more than just aircon compressor then it will affect that too
so it is not recomended you run without it.
if it was me with my laziness i would just cut it and get a new belt with the bearing. but its better to remove it properly and if you do replace the
belt keep the old as a spare.

I was thinking along the same lines - just cut the old one off
