Rover cars has 4.1's i think?
Remember that the lower the ratio you go in Lr's, the weaker it is.
Stick with 3.5's or go to AFTERMARKET ratios, not factory.

if high range isn't low enough, then low range definitly won't be low enough. it isn't already! Maxi Drive sell the great basin rover c&p in 4.11 and 4.75. these are made from better material and the front's are reverse cut. imo 4.11 would be the go, it will make the engine work in a differnt rev range, but as newer motors have there toque up higher it may make it work a bit better. but if you want to change the transfer ratios MD also has these, as do alot of other rover specialests Mike, i thought the only ratio's ever made by LR were 3.54 and 4.7 excluding the 101's of course(5.57-1)

But as i'm in the Leafy Greens it is undulated and it craps me now the 1st gear. Good on normal roads except mild hill starts..... Ahhhhh

Because i run 35" simex i have gone 4.75 ring and pinions. But as all ready said the Series ones are as strong a toffee. Had to do this as i was going threw clutches, as i was having to slip the clutch to get the turbo to cut in and catch the power band'
So i put Kam ones in . Very strong. Lot stronger than the 3.5's . They say they are designed to take 500 BHP. I now know 6 of my mates who now run these. Half of us with Diesels and the other have v8 from 3.9 to 4.6
All of us have given them some real stiuck and they stick come back for more

If you considering a transfer box I understand the county 110s with the Santana LT85 5 speed box had a transfer box that had a different ratio to the later defender R380's transfer box. The transfer boxes out of both were called a LT 230.

The 4.7s have a thicker crown wheel to bring that gear closer to a smaller pinion. Is the smaller pinion stronger than the factory one, or a 4.1? I doubt, Rover ones are small to start with.
IMHO changing diff gears is the go, as it affects both low and high range. The aftermarket 4.1's are as strong as the 3.54's due to better materials. Mine were made by Dana for the Rover diff also.
Or you could go the Jac Mac toy conversion and get pretty much any ratio you want plus stronger cv's to boot.
I am seriously considering this.

Don't know about the diffs, but carpoint.com.au would know. Defenders have 235/86/16 tyres which are very nearly 32s, not 31s.Quote:
