Hi All,
just migrated from the OL forum which is getting a tad boring these days.
I have a niggle with my Defender which I would like to get sorted while it is still under warranty. Namely a subtle high frequency vibration which is most noticeable when accelerating hard in 3rd gear, around 50-60kmh.
It can be felt through the gear lever and is also noticeable if you rest your hand on the lever at any speed.
I have been complaining to the dealer for the last 60,000km, they have tried a few things like rotating prop shafts, tightening gearbox mounts etc, but mostly they claim not to be able to find a vibration.
Now this may be 'normal' for a Td5 Defender? I'm sure it didn't do it when new though.
Any ideas? (I am taking it to Rovertech for an inspection next week so the dealer can sort out any problems before the end of warranty (end of December)).

My Bro is a Mechanical Engineer an as soon as I told him the symptons he suggested that.
I've had the thing at the Dealers a couple of times, and they have replaced every thing from the Gear knob down including a total rebuild on the gearbox (All bearings ect) And have come up with the fly wheel as the cause of the problem. No complaints from me as they have been fantastic about the whole thing. Loan car for the lady and very helpful all the way. My warrenty is also up in December so I'm very glad they are being so thorough.
Hope you find the problem

Thanks Phoenix,
yeah the OL forum has been getting very tedious lately, turning into a few people's private chatroom!
Welcome back from your honeymoon!
Well, I took the Defender to Rovertech for an inspection. Only things they found were a slightly worn rear suspension balljoint (pretty standard), and some slight oil seepage from g/box and t/case. Nothing serious but stuff I might as well get the dealer to fix before the warranty expires. Didn't pick up the vibration although I did ask them to look for it.
This vibration is driving me nuts because I seem to be the only person who can feel it. Took it to Southern yesterday and took the service manager out for a drive. He suggested that such vibrations are "characteristic" (yes I've seen the other thread). I pointed out that it didn't do it when new, his answer was that vibrations appear as components start to wear. 8O
Anyway, he agreed that it should be looked at and it will be going in next week. At least then the "fault" is registered on their system before the end of warranty.
Hokey Dokey,
just got the vehicle back after a week at the dealer for its end of warranty check and fix. The transfer box had to come out to fix some minor oil leaks, they also re-shimmed the centre diff to remove some backlash.
And now, the vibration has reduced considerably. The harshness in 3rd between 50-60kmh has gone.
Could it have been gearbox mounts? Probably never know, I'm happy now though. There is still some vibration of course but that's standard with this sort of diesel.
I did take out the extended warranty. Doing it through my salary package means it cost about $900 for 3 years, so not too bad. Only time will tell whether it was worth it!
