Gearbox hard to shift when cold

    Hey all
My gears are rather stiff to change when cold on my td5 disco
Particularly on down shift, you pretty much have to wait till the vehicle has come to a stop to get it back in to first or second gear. It's ok once it has warmed up

Could it be as simple as trying new oil? The car yard fitted a new clutch just before I picked the car up. I thought they would have changed the of then.
What gear oil is best for the td5?

If the gearbox oil has been replaced with 80w/90 oil, then this can cause your problem.

Original spec for the R380 was a lighter oil, MTF rings a bell.

Do you know what oil is in it now?
How cold (is the weather) do you mean and is it OK from cold start in warmer weather?

70-75 or 75-85 gear oil is roughly what you're aiming for in the R380.

It's still a bit stiff in summer but worse in winter. The car yard had their own work shop out the back so they prob just put in what ever they had. I will change it and see how it goes.

I had the same problem and switched to Penrite Manual gear oil 75-80W which is semi-synthetic and now it changes real smooth.

I just changed mine today, used penrite fully synthetic 75w-85 instantaneous difference, I'll report back in a week for an update. PS does anybody have any tips on undoing the 32mm drain plug, my socket was too big so I had to dissconect my driveshaft (or is this the norm)? Check the wear n tear pic below

I bought a 32mm open end/ring spanner from supercrap for about $25, or I use a large shifter.

Your wear and tear look similar to mine, maybe a little worse.

Yeah I don't think it'd had been changed in a very long time. The nut was so tight, used a pretty long half inch bar, it took a lot of force.

just an update, after a week or so, driving around with 75w-85 fully synthetic, the gearbox decided it did not like it at all. Especially on cold mornings, wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd. Changed back to dex3 fully synthetic, and has made a vast improvement, no crunching and no problems on cold mornings. I don't know what i was thinking when going with 75w-85 the guy at autobarn talked me into it. Should have stayed with the recommendations.
