Rear end rattle and other probs, help required.
Hi all,
We are away up in Broome , limited tools.
The car is a 2004 defender with sals rear and true tracs front and rear.
We have just done the Tanami, canning, Gary junction stuff.
There is something wrong in the rear end , it sounds like a dull thumping rattling noise when going over bumps and occasionally on power on ,the car steers and drives straight.
New shocks went in at Alice and have only done 1500k although 900 was the Tanami rd, it has an adjustable ball joint on the a frame which I have nipped up. I have been underneath with the tyre lever and can't find any thing with play. The wheel bearings have a little bit of play but nothing that should cause this amount of noise. The rear diff, when hot after towing , make a clunking when turning if the centre is locked it sounds like it ramps up on a cam and then drips off the edge and starts again, I have put this down to the true trac centre, I dropped the oil in the diff and all looked good. It operates like an open centre while static on an axle stand.
Also if I really load up the car on a ramp, steep exit type situation a terrible noise comes from underneath it sounds like it comes from the transfer case.
I would describe the noise as gears or splines not engaging enough and slipping.
This was there before harsh roads.
If ant one could help with some diagnosis tips this would be really appreciated.
Thanks.

I have been back underneath, the rear prop to t.c bolts were loose , tightened these up. It seems that the trailing arm to axle bushes have some play as the diff nose tilts up and down while rocking back and forth with a raised rear wheel.
Lower bushes flogged out on the trailing arms hardly any vertical movement but heaps of horizontal.
We will need press for this one.

You could always burn the rubber out, hacksaw the outer steel and replace with poly bushes.

Good luck.
Fitzy, I have let Dan know that you may be in contact. Don't hesitate to call him for any heads up you might require.

Hi Pierre
In the past there was a landrover trained mechanic at Broome motors , unfortunately he has moved on. Their guys in the office and in the worship had never worked on a defender so it was a bit of hard work. Luckily I had a parts catalogue and workshop manual and the job jot done.
Unfortunately on the way up to middle lagoon the car started to miss badly, I sat frustrated for a while then took out the injector loom gave it a squirt of injector cleaner put it back together and all is well for now.
I will order a new harness and cross my fingers.
We still have 4 months of travel left and have only really just got into the harder stuff.
Since we left in feb.
Extended side mirrors - cracked arms
New expansion tank cap
New shocks
One new battery
Front qt diff plate fell off at 80 kph
Rear bushes
rear wheel carrier cracked
New tyres
Rear diff playing up but this could have been caused by the bushes.
Most of these are maintenance or consumables , but it just seems to be one thing after another.
Hope things improve.

Parts
Fitz, get the bits from Perth. Rovacraft have head office there. You will get stuff overnight (ish) to Broome Post Office, or to an address if you have one there.
Saves the big mark-up. Enjoy the fish at Middle Lagoon, lucky dog.
