G'day. My front hubs leak like a sive. I have been told you can replace the square plugs with a greese nipple and fill them with greese. Will this stuff my front hubs(steering) after a while? Thanks Deano

Firstly to answer Deano's question, if you are driving a Series Landrover the answer is NO! it has to run in oil, the Uni joints are Hardy Spicer and are designed to run in oil, also the oil lubricates the Railko bush (upper swivel pin) and also the bearing for the lower swivel pin, if your housing for Swivel pin bearings is leaking it is usaully caused by pitting on the chrome surface this needs to be replaced as well as new seals especially if you have used it on the beach (leaking oil attracts sand++++). They can be succesfully fixed using Loctite Ultra-Blue sealer when putting it all back together, I did my first restoration on a S2A 88" GS L/rover almost 6 years ago and it doesn't leak, as to Ace's question I think you are driving a Disco? I believe there is a type of grease that you can buy from Landrover it is for use with CV joints (different to Hardy Spicer uni's), but you may also need to replace your Oil Seal for the Swivel Pin housing if it's leaking that bad, hope that helps.
PS Deano if you use the grease the uni-joints will cut a path through it like a knife through hot butter and nothing will get lubricated resulting in a major overhaul and a few dollars more!!!!, don't even think about Fluid grease either cheers Dennis
Probably are supposed to use oil as lubricant.Originally posted by Dinty

I firmly pack mine with moly grease, lifting the top plate off the bush until grease oozes out to make sure it's full. Do it once every six months or on the major services depending on what work it's done.
I'll let you know how many k's and how long I've been using grease when it fails. Already done 60,000k after changing over to grease and it had 150,000k when I bought it, so it'll be a while I'd guess.
The Army used grease in their series Land Rovers rather than oil because they didn't leak as badly. I do not know what the story is with the 110s though.
Mine arent leaking at all, i was just wondering if there was an easier way to service the wheel bearings without stripping things down. The current system is fine, just looking for ways to make things easier. Thanks for the advice anyhow dinty. Matt

The Army has just started to use Grease in the hubs
Yup,
Oil is the correct way to go on a series vehicle, that's the way they were designed, the oil lubricates the Swivel bush, and the Taper Roller Bearing, the oil leaking from the Swivel seal is an indication that EIGHER the chrome ball is worn or that the Swivel Bush is worn and needs adjusting (removal of shims) or the bush needs replacing. An indication of bush wear is excess wear on the inside edge of the tyres (camber)
The Swivel Pins in my vehicle are now nearing needing replacement at 12.5 years and 196,300 MILES, the free wheeling hubs were engaged monthly for aprox 100 miles, hubs filled with EPX 80-90. Shim adjustment was done at 110,000 miles.
