    Sensor placement

Hi all, I know there has been several threads on this subject, and there seems to be no definitive answer, so just after some suggestions, peoples thoughts etc. Have just fitted an engine saver alarm for low coolant, and I am about to fit an engine guard alarm that has two temperature sensors. Car is a 300 tdi defender. Question is where would be the best place for fitting the sensors. My main concern is engine temp, and I was going to fit one sensor at the back of the donk near the lifting eye - I believe there is a threaded hole there already? Is this the best place? And where should I use the second thermocouple? Measure gearbox temp? Water temp? Another place on the donk?
    Any advice/suggestions appreciated
    Cheers

I seem to remember seeing one which screwed into the top of the cooling system to replace the plug. Is that the one you're getting?

Yeah the one which replaces the radiator cap is the low coolant alarm. Ended up fitting the engine guard sensors to the thermostat housing and the other one to the front of the engine about half way down, near the injector pipes. So far so good, but haven't taken it out for a big run to check temps yet....

I'd be interested to hear how those sensors read compared to each other. On the couple of 300tdis I've had, I fitted a single sensor on the RH side of the head below #1 injector. Have tried on the LH side of the head but found it too reactive to engine load - presumed it was influence from turbo manifold.

So far they seem to stay within about 5 degrees of each other, although I have mostly only been doing short trips between work and home, not ideal I know as the engine doesn't really get up to full operating temperature before I turn it off. Yesterday afternoon driving home after work and a running a few errands the engine temp was reading 86, and the thermostat temp was sitting at 82. Hopefully I will have a chance on the weekend to take her out for a good run and get some decent data.
