Is the whining gear box in an 83 4 speed Rangie a common thing? I think I read somewhere that this was to be expected for this model. If this is the case is there any way to reduce the noise by using a different type of fluid other than the engine oil like the manual states?

In a Series transfercase excessive whining noise is usually caused by the intermediate gear.The fix is quite easy if this is the cause,you add extra shims and the din presides somewhat.If anybody has rebuilt a rangie transfercase they should be able to state if they need shims like the series transfercase does.
