Last time I checked Elring was the correct choice.

My warped head spat out 3 Elring Composite gaskets in 1 year, one Victor rienz MLS head gasket lasted for about 3 years without a problem, replaced the warped head with a new AMC head and used the recommended (head warranty void if I didn't use the supplied VR MLS gasket) and has run sweet ever since. The updated replacement LR head gasket is a MLS with a LR part#. I don't understand why there is a reluctance to use the updated MLS HG, there is nothing special about a composite gasket, especially when a warped 300TDi head is involved, Regards Frank.

Dougal, the Elring 300tdi gaskets are composite.

But from the ongoing conversation in many posts on this site and elsewhere it seems that there are user experiences that separately prefer the use of each type - I'm left wondering if it is the care taken with installation (scrupulous cleaning of the surfaces) that makes the difference - ?

So are mls available in all thicknesses or just thickest?

I'm planning more boost and won't be using a composite gasket.

The actual page link doesn't copy but if you look at their catalogue it indicates at least that they have 1,2 & 3 hole gaskets which have compressible seals on waterways and bolt holes. They appear to go up to 1.6mm thickness.

I was under the impression you needed perfect surfaces for mls. like new. So I am surprised to hear it was more effective on a warped head than composite. I was reluctant to use mls over elring because elring came recommended by Turners, known to last the expected service interval and was supposedly more forgiving when it comes to surface condition. At the time I didn't find many ringing endorsements to be convinced on mls.

It's good to hear you are getting results with mls gaskets though. Might try one if I get an elring pop before it's time. What's the recommend service interval on a Victor rienz?

I'm pretty sure MLS head gaskets are a "Fit and forget"...

All the tough engines use mls. I make a habit of surfacing the block with a large oil stone. It can take hours but it's well worth it. I'll be using a new head.
